My partner and I will be spending a month in Malaysia this year and we are keen to do the Open Water course while we are there. Ideally we would love to do our classroom and pool sessions in KL (or even classroom work online) and then go to one of the islands like Redang or Tioman to do the open water dives. We will be spending a fair amount of time in KL as we have family there, and don't really want to waste our "holiday" time on the islands sitting in a classroom and diving in a hotel pool. Does anyone know of a diving school that could help us do it that way?

Also, later in our trip, after we are certified, we are thinking of going to Mabul/Sipadan to dive. Would the dive operators there allow us to dive Sipadan having only just completed the course?

Why not do your classroom and pool sessions in Oz and do the referral open water dives in Malaysia?

Dive operators at Mabul will allow you to dive at Sipadan having witnessed somebody with absolutely no buoyancy control almost go OOA last year when she descended to 30M totally clueless and oblivious of what danger she was in.

Dive within your limits and you can't go wrong.

Make sure you choose an honest operator to dive Sipadan!! There is a set quota everyday.
Newly certified OW diver won't be able to enjoy all the sites being offered on Sipadan.
BTW, please check the diving season on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It won't be funny if your stay in the country is at the 'wrong' time of the year.

you could also head to Kota Kinabalu or somewhere in sabah and do your certification more on the way to Sipadan.. there's a ton of operators there. Check out Diverse Borneo and Borneo Divers. They can arrange the sipadan trip too if you want i believe
