I tried convincing myself that dive conditions would be good today. It was supposed to be the calm before the storm but as we ventured out toward Palos Verdes the wind continued to grow. We checked out a few potential dive sites before settling for Halfway Reef.

The wind chop was building as we dropped. Our chain was at a strange angle. We're used to dropping straight down, but today we had to swim at 45° to the anchor. By the time we reached the reef, we nearly aborted the dive. Visibility was three feet and the surge was strong enough to make holding our cameras still very difficult.

I swam around the reef hoping for some relief. Thirty minutes later, the visibility opened up to five feet. By the time I reached the anchor again, Merry was already rinsing her gear on the boat. I stuck it out for a bit longer before calling it a day.

It's supposed to rain tomorrow and the nitrox compressor at Dive n Surf is down for the next few weeks. I see yard work in my very near future. :(

I took one look at the ocean this morning here in So. Orange County and tried to convince myself of the same thing - maybe it will be ok... The more I watched the water I quickly changed my mind. At least you got out and tried. I wimped out. :)

Same up north, to sporty for me to do the drive

I got out this weekend in the So Cal/No Cal/PNW - I think many of us Pacific NW divers have our roots in California.
Anyway, I spent Friday through Sunday diving in the Hood Canal. Water temps were 46 degrees, visibility was very milky and ranged from 5 to 20 feet depending on depth. Lots of Wolf Eels, Plumose Anemones and Giant Pacific Octos though!

Very pretty diving in your neck of the woods! My grandparents had a place on Orcas Is. and a 19' Tollycraft boat and I spent many happy summers as a kid in the 1960's diving and fishing the San Juans. Just a tad north of you as I recall.

I love these SoCal threads and look forward to making it back home to do some diving in the next year. A dive st Shaw's and the oil rigs are in my future.

Keep posting pics and making me miss home.
