leaky housing & poor customer service, did you ever feel ripped off?

i have been shooting underwater stills for about 20 years and after experimenting shooting video on a dslr i decided to make the switch to an hd video camera and housing. so i purchased a new video housing and hd camera to take on a five month trip to film whale sharks in honduras (utila), followed by a two month trip to ecuador (galapagos liveaboard and isla de la plata).
i headed off with my new equipment, amazed at the opportunity of the year ahead of me. the housing leaked at 40 feet on its first use in honduras, a small slow leak but one which made it impossible to use the housing. five months of seeing whale sharks every week and not a second of hd footage shot. frustrating to say the least!
i returned to the states sent the housing back to the manufacturer and in tens days it was shipped back to me “repaired”, just in time for my trip to ecuador.
on the first dive in ecuador the “repaired” housing leaked again, this time at 30 feet but now it was no longer a small leak, this time it flooded in, filling the housing. my video camera was ruined in a matter of seconds. now i’m in the galapagos followed by a month as a volunteer on a giant manta research project at isla de la plata and yet again not a second of footage and a ruined video camera. beyond frustrating!
in both honduras and ecuador there were pro cameramen who looked at the housing and in both instances the consensus was that there was no problem with the o rings but the latches that secured the back of the housing didn’t seem to be pulling tight enough to create a water tight seal.
i emailed the manufacturer from ecuador but received no reply.
as soon as i returned to the u.s. i sent it back to the maker and requested a refund. after a month and several unanswered emails they finally got back to me saying that they would not issue a refund, the housing was fine. despite “repairing” the housing after its first use, the maker claims none of their housings have ever flooded due to maker error, implying it must be my fault.
after a flood on first use, manufacturer repair and a flood and destroy camera second use, it seems to me my housing was a manufacturing LEMON. it has never been water tight, not even after being repaired and i have never been able to use it for its intended purpose, to shoot video!
i thought an apology and a refund was the least i was entitled to?
i never asked the maker to pay for my ruined camera or to compensate me for the tens of thousands of dollars i spent to go on trips which were driven by my desire to shoot underwater video. i just wanted my purchase price returned.
they seem to think that they should send me the housing back and i should just buy another video camera and try using the housing again (and flood again, destroying a camera, again??).
what a great position for a manufacturer to take, deny all fault and blame the customer for any problems with their product.
to be clear, this is not about money, its about principals.
if a product is sold and never functions for its stated purpose, is “repaired” but continues to be faulty, shouldn’t the customer be refunded their money?
 
1st at all, you`ve made some mistakes too. Before you go diving you want to make sure your equipment is in good condition. Since it was a new housing, you should have made the leak test in the bathtub and another test around 30-40m. I put some toilet paper inside the housing and check it after each test.
in 2009 i`ve had a problem with shutter button of Sealife DC1000. The button remained stuck during the dive. I returned the camera after the 1st trip, got one new from LS then sold it. New buyer had the same problem during the trip. Then, i had to return the cash to the buyer and demand refund from LS. THey gave the cash back in 2 weeks after i had to threat him with Consumer Protection office:)
 
yeah, but take the camera out of the equation. You buy a housing for a large underwater trip. It fails to do what it should despite being sent back and 'fixed'. Surely by now the thing is not fit for purpose and the OP should be given a refund.
 
first use in honduras i snorkeled with it and no camera but no leak. it wasn't until i went down to 40ft that the leaking started.
second use, when it leaked in the galapagos it had just been "repaired" and when you've only got two days and eight dives at darwin arch, doing tests on a housing is out of the question.
 
Sounds like this guy forgot to use his orings!! LOL Anyone who dives knows that the deeper you go that the pressure would hold and suck in the plates and not let water in. I know cause i bet my buddy that an we went down and unlatched the clips and the pressure held the plate on. But dont try that at home kids!!
 
no i didn't forget the o rings "lol" and the leaks always started in relatively shallow water. after 20 years of using housings i know how to install and maintain o rings. with latches and o rings at both ends of the housing, its strange that it was always the end with looser latches that flooded. lol
 
Jonny deeper must worked for equinox. He just joined this group and all his comments have been about my problem with that company
