LDS VS Internet Sale!!!

Point being... I knew he didn't want steel, so if they wanted a sale they would have sold me what I want... I know they have it - I am looking at it. But they really sent me away telling me I don't want that... SO if someone does their own research and wants something for their own reason - doesn't it seem fit that if the LDS wants to stay in business that they would make the sale. Kuudos for them - they advised me, but they could have still made the sale since I didn't change my mind.

LDS should not treat people like they don't know what they want. I have been cert since 91 - Haven't dove much for the time - but I stayed up to date and know my gear.

Then why were you shopping for an AL100 Ms. "I Know My Gear"?

PS - Your LDS probably doesn't want your business if your hubby disrupts their dive trips like that.

its 1.9lbs + vs being -.. is 2lbs going to kill me? It didnt when I dove with it before.. Doubt it will the next time around.

Hmmm.. Its my choice as to what I want and what I want to spend my $$ on.. I personally do not want a steel tank. Simple. Dont make it into anything more elaborate. I understand what you all are saying but that does not mean I have to accept it and be fine with that method of thought.

The specs on the tanks I listed earlier are from XS. The brand they carry at the LDS.
So the specs are spot on. 1.9lbs of + is not going to make a whole lot of difference when I already have my toys with me.. dive knife (of doom?!?), light, maybe a camera, noise making doohicky, im sure most of you picture me with a string of grenades as well. 1.9lbs is not 5.. and certainly not 10.. we are afterall, talking about less than 2lbs.

Any of you ever get a tank custom painted? Not skinned, but painted? Figure the costs of that on top of an already expensive steel tank!?!? How is that anywhere near worth it? I would rather just get a black tank and do with it what I please.. Heck, I may just fill it with nitrox and not label it Nitrox! oohh SCUBA SINNER!


As for the LDS not wanting our business, you are assuming (bad habit, you should look into some therapy or something for that) that we go on trips with them.. Not. We are not into diving for the social aspect and certainly able to get better prices going on our own withing our own schedule.
Disrupting their dive trips. geesh.. really.

The AL100 is not a very good tank and I would as a friend explained why I think that! A LDS doing the right thing should advise you about the tank and why it is not so good! The AL100 is a 3300psi tank and filed to 3000psi and cold to say 2850psi gives you about 83 cubic feet of air for three times the expense! I would tell you a LP95+ can be filled to the same 3000psi and cooled to 2850psi and you have close to 109 cubic feet of air and a tank that allows you to take off 8 to 10lbs of your belt! Plus it is smaller and the same price! If you still wanted the other tank for your own reasons then you bought a tank!

buoyancy empty: - 2.5 lbs
weight empty: 33 lbs

XS Scuba AL100 (made by Luxfer)
buoyancy empty: + 2.9 lbs (actually, it is probably more since they measure the buoyancy of this tank to be +1.9lbs when it is down to 500psi, not when it is empty. I added a pound for the 15 cu ft of gas left in the tank when it is at 500psi.)
weight empty: 41.0 lbs.

Topside, the Al100 weighs 8 lbs more than the commonly available HP100 steel tank. But, to get the same buoyancy characteristics, you need to add ~5lbs more lead when using an Al100. So on the beach, you need to carry ~13lbs more weight with an Al100 than what you would with a steel HP 100.

I would expect any decent dive shop to recommend against an Al100. Even though you tolerate the weight well, there is no getting around it - there are far better choices than an Al100.

Then again, it does come in black.

I dont like the look of steel. I am snobbish and prefer all my stuff to be black. Just a color preference.. I also do not like the properties of steel compared to Al when dealing with water. I would much rather have Al anyday.

I recently went thru a similar debate. I'm quite happy with my S63s and s80s but wanted one larger tank for FGB trips where an S80 was pressed a bit for capacity. The problem I had was with a 6lb plate, I used no lead when the water was warm so I was really looking for an S92 or S100 to not leave me overweight. But I found a good buy on an E7-100 and went with it because it is the same diameter as my S63/80. I'd rather not have to adjust those scubapro tank straps if I don't have to. Instead, I'll use a few pounds less lead in cooler water, and add a shortie in warm water to counter the negative buoyancy of the E7.

So, I have a few comments here... paint chips..., skins peel... To me, there is nothing sexier than the look of hot dipped galv... And it puts up nicely w/ continuous salt water abuse w/o having to worry about - shock - rinsing your gear, talk about a real scuba sin, I believe I'm a few 1000 hail mary's behind... In addition steel tanks tend to have significantly longer service lives...

As for the nitrox bands... I'm with you there... if someone steals my tank, they have bigger concerns than not knowing the MOD....

I'm more a function over form kinda guy... If you wanna base your purchase on asthetic values; more power to ya...

As to the topic of cost.... Used steel tanks can be found all the time..., and because of the longer service life, as long as its reasonable taken care of, you'll not get stuck w/ a melon...

Since this has turned into an AL100 discussion, I offer this observation not on the buoyancy of the AL100 but the enormous size. I dive steel HP100s and HP130s. Last weekend I dove beside a gentleman who had one of these AL100s. The AL100 completely dwarfed my compact HP100s, and this AL tank was also noticeably larger than my steel HP130s. What is the attraction of that AL tank when you can carry 130 cf with better buoyancy characteristics in a more compact package?
