I just don't log dives
My question is how many lbs of lift do i need to dive a faber steel 100 tank as a single?

right now i have a sing with 32# of lift and was wondering if this would work or if i need more lift to dive this tank.

Let me know if you need any other info to more accurately answer the question, I will be checking frequently. Thank you.
 
The first question that will be asked is, "What type of thermal protection are you using?"

The second question will probably be, "What type of back plate are you using?"

And a possible third question will be, "Is it a high or low pressure tank?"

That handsome glowing fellow (The Kraken :D ) is correct.

The only way to get an accurate answer is to know the current bouyancy of your exposure protection and current tank & rig, and the bouyancy of the new tank; only then you can calculate how much lift you'll probably need.

I wear a 3mm waterproof capri wetsuit and a steel bp with an extra 4lbs on the cam strap. I dive this rig with an aluminum 80 usually.
 
Which Faber steel tank model? I dive with the M-series and it has -6lbs buoyancy when empty. The F-series is different.

Faber has an online website that has specifications for the tanks showing the actual weights empty/full and buoyancy characteristics, empty/full. They even have the weight of the valves included as well.

Unless you are, uh, well, "personally buoyant" you are very likely over weighted.

If you are close to neutral in your swim trunks then you need enough ballast to overcome the buoyancy of your wetsuit and empty cylinder

A typical 3mm suit is about +4 lbs. and a empty al 80 is a bout +4 lbs

A SS back plate and harness is about -6, your reg is -2, + 4 lbs of lead. That means you have about 12 lbs of total ballast when your tank is empty.

12 lbs of ballast to sink a +4lbs suit 3mm wetsuit and +4 empty al 80 probably more than you need. Try it without the extra 4 lbs of lead.

Ina 3mm suit and al 80's you can use a very small wing. Your rig, plate, full al 80 and reg is only about -10 lbs, and your suit cannot loose more ~4 lbs due to compression.

Tropical waters with buoyant tanks is why 17 lbs wings produced.

I would dive a 32# wing with your set-up.

However, it's best to calculate for yourself. The wing needs to compensate for the gas at the beginning of the dive and any exposure protection compression. In addition, many divers like for the wing to float the gear on the surface without the diver.

The biggest concern I have regarding your set-up is that you might be overweighted with your Faber HP100 and a steel backplate.
 
how buoyant is an aluminum backplate? also, does anyone know the ~buoyancy of the steel 100 tank in fresh and salt water? I cant seem to login to the faber site.
 
A faber MP-100 (3180 working pressure, + fill to 3498) is -14.5 lbs when full and -7.5 lbs when empty.
 
also, how can i measure whether i am properly weighted in the water or not?
