My question is, how do you effectivly layer wetsuits and not waste money. The normal suit that I dive in is a 3mm, I am planning on getting a 7mm for some of the colder areas I am planning on going, but I understand you can layer these suits for max warmth if needed. So do you size the 7mm to the outside of the 3mm which would make it not useable for just using the 7mm on its own? Or fit a 7mm and deal with a little strech in the suit if it occurs?

Bob3:
Go with a properly fitting 7mm, if you want to add anything for extra warmth, go with a hooded vest.
Or... just get a 7mm with the attached hood. (check out Scuba Max if you have any shops near you that stock them)

In 46 degree water my girlfriend is wearing a 7mm farmer john and a scuba pro 3/5m hooded vest and is STILL cold after only a few minutes into the dive. His question still stands. . . how do you properly layer wetsuits? or is their no "right" way of doing it? I'm thinking of getting a 3mm shorty to go with her suit. I wish i would of just got her a drysuit but we are past the point of no return and have already taken $400 in sunk cost.
