It seems to me that if this accident involved defective rental gear and students, then the issue of liability probably needs to be considered.
 
Sounds like neither of them thought of droping her weightbelt or weight pockets, but that might just be information that was left out in the text. I can say that it would be my personal go to solution(and why I wouldn't recommend integrated weight BCDs, everyone knows left hand release... KISS principle)

When did this change? Holy Smokes - did you mean right hand release - but typed left?
