I have read a few of the responses to the thread "laws, laws' laws" and I see where people have responded saying "there is a law that you MUST have a buddy"???

I thought you had to have a buddy to dive. Is that not correct?? I understand the safety aspect of having one but is it or isn't it a law??

The Law of Natural Selection is the only "law" I know that effects this. Unless if you are properly equipped and trained to solo dive this is the only one you need.

Non lawyer take on it. As long as whoever it is that controls the access to the dive site does not have their own rules, there are no laws here in FL that restrict diving or mandate particular diving practices. At least as far as I know, YMMV, DAYOR, WEWYLTAILM, all that good stuff.

Ah, the Buddy Law. Should have learned about that the same time you learned about Boyle's Law, Dalton's Law, and Cole's Law.

I have heard of a couple of places where the local authorities will not let people dive without a buddy, ones I have heard of were on west coast, but I am sure there are others spotted around. I believe it's those evil lawyers who are worried about possible wrongful death suits who instigate this crap. Here in Texas, no buddy required, no flag even required. But if you do fly flag, you are legally entitled to clear area around flag, which may or may not be enforced to your satisfaction. God Bless Texas ;) :D

I think there are scuba police in Quebec, but none in the USA.

Edmonds Underwater Park outside of Seattle has an ordinance requiring a dive buddy and solo divers can be ticketed.
