Feeding! Sponges draw water in through their external surface using flagellated cells known as choanocytes and then the filtered water is expelled through the large opening or osculum.
 
Thanks Bill----I really didn't 'see it' going on till I got back home & started looking closely @ my pics.......lol, I guess that's what's going on --& not backscatter..:).....
