A couple of thoughts...
Most technical dive training agencies train divers to plan and configure for a maximum degree of self reliance and redundancy, if for no other reason than to not be a liability to the dive team.
Within that framework, the degree to which techncial divers use a buddy system or team approach varies.
Some tech divers and tech training agencies virtually insist on teams of 2 to 3 divers and the degree of planning that goes in to those dives is immense compared to normal recreational standards. At the other extreme some tech divers will dive solo in some situations where the conditions may be suited to that approach.
So..you can't make the general statement that technical divers do not normally use a buddy system and expect it to be considered accurate.
And...at this point there is not enough information to even be able to speculate whether the use or non-use of a buddy system was a factor in this accident.
What is certain is that if this discussion gets ugly and degrenerates into an argument or character assasinations it will get heavily moderated, so play nice.

Without more information, it's impossible to understand, or discuss what happened.
Speculating that the man was diving alone is just that, speculation. Since there are only a few outfits that are allowed to take divers on this site, I'm betting that a buddy or team system was in place, and there is a lot more to the story.
Suggesting that Technical divers generally don't use a buddy, team, or support system is simply not true. I'm not tech certified, but I certainly know and dive with a lot of those who are. I don't know of any tech diver who does deep dives solo. I've certainly read about them, and they exist. Such a generalization about how MOST tech divers dive however is false.

that diver that died was my man - his buddies were there - they all did everything they could - my man died doing something he dearly loved - it was just a horribly devastating accident - without going into detail - he did not breath the wrong gas - his buddies were all there - and they did everything they could - it was just not enough - devastating to all of us would be an understatement
