Just got back from two weeks in Roatan (Dec. 1- 15). We lucked in to 2 weeks of excellent weather. Las Rochas has 6 cabanas, a very good restaurant and a dive shop just steps from your door!

The staff are very personable and breakfast is served in your cabana every morning at 8:00 a.m. (continental type).

Las Rochas is located at the end of West End Beach (closest to West End) and is a half hour beach walk to town (but beware of a beach bandito who struck 3 times while we were there...carries a knife and cut one of the victims in the hand).

There are many private homes and small resorts in West End Beach where you can walk to and the beautiful beach at the far end (cruise ship guests come there once a week so it can be crowded that day...but usually not a lot of people except in front of the Italian resort called Henry Morgans).

Good places to eat in town include Half Moon Bay and the Argentine Grill. If you rent a vehicle its worth the drive to Gio's at French Harbour!

We made 15 dives and saw sea turtles, lobster, crab, spotted rays, garden eels, etc....but not as many large fish as we encountered on our first trip to Roatan in 1995. The development (sewage and pollution) is taking its toll on the reef...hopefully the new sewage plant being built by the airport will lesson the effect...and more money going back to Roatan from the Honduran government is needed to preserve the island!

I just looked on the web today before I read your post on this property, looks fairly reasonable. Prices look good, but what about the accomodations?

Who did you do your diving with? Did you go to AKR at all or was the west end enough.

Would like to hear more? Did you rent vehicle, etc.

thanks,

The accommodations were individual cabanas. Sparely furnished with a porch (hammock). There is a picture on their website.

You can dive anywhere along Roatan from West End Beach. The new wreck sunk in November is close to AKR and we stopped there to off gas. I liked the diving because there was a max of 6 people and most of the time we were 4 or less. AKR has many dive boats and full to capacity!

We did rent a vehicle one day to tour the island (we were there 7 years ago and wanted to see the changes). The paved road is good but there are some rough spots off road (especially rough in the rainy season). We rented from Sandy Bay rentals for $50 US which isn't bad. Gas is $3 a gallon but you really don't need much to tour the island.

We rented an apartment in Sandy Bay ( past AKR ) and basically, we had a dock to ourselves. To snorkle the reef, we jumped in and swam 40 metres and we were there.
It's a quiter part of the reef..lot's of spotted rays and morays. There was a channel that led to a wall, and it was amazing just snorkeling over the 200 foot wall.

To dive, we just walked 10 minutes up the beach in the morning and dove with Bay Islands Beach Resort. When they are not that busy, they'll let others dive. Small laid back resort, with good powerful boats. Most dives there were 4 of us.

Gio's has quite the food

Scubado,

Any shore diving at Las Rocas? the place looks pretty cool. How good is their dive operator?

thanks
Ivan

There is a fair amount of boat traffic back and forth from West End Beach to West End so it really isn't conducive to shore diving. Some people did a bit of snorkelling around the beach area.

Boat diving is the best way and most of the reef is a short ride away!
