Well in India that's not too surprising..... in poorly lit rooms there ARE furry things running around. There are more rats in India than people!~

[edit] Come to think of it, why were you taking a malaria prophylaxis in India? The chances of you getting Malaria in India are very very slim. [/edit]

Geez ya' still at it Dr. Diver0001!

See the information listed at the CDC and their recommendations for Asia.

HUH?

Well as long as we're exchanging URL's to prove our point

Glad you said it. Interesting that you're presenting UCSC data as I am a former alumnus from that and other UC campuses. What's the context of the data?

On an FYI - the rural parts of India where we were conducting research didn't have the best mossie control. That being said, Mumbai, Hyderbad, Chennai etc. weren't top-notch with control either. Minute I landed I had heaps of the little suckers on me at Hyderabad.

As per the furry crits. There were enough of them everywhere...including little friends making their way through the sink. However, the furries that I and others saw were purely fictional which makes Larium scary s**t in my book.

I spent a little over 6 months on "walk around" in some of the most fantastic places and in some of the scariest most disease ridden holes in India. And yet, nothing scared me more than being in Chipata Zambia. If there is an epicenter on this planet where all disease starts and spreads to the rest of world, it's Chipata Zambia (given, I haven't been there for 20 years). Compared to that, even Hyderabad and down-town Calcutta (one of the dirtiest places on the face of this earth) is like licking gravy off your grandmother's china.

Yeah, that *is* scary. I don't want to joke about that. People should listen to the serious stuff that's being said about Larium on this thread.

Cheers. I hear you on Africa. I turned down an African assignment because of disease and political unrest. As per India, luckily none of us came down with anything other than the usual case of the runs.

Best.

After nearly 30 years in Asia, I have to agree with Diver0001 that I never found it necessary to take anti-malarials in India...(excluding Andaman Islands) Dengue would however would be of concern.
After reading the information here I will also advise my surfer guest against using it (Larium)....personally I don't use anything anymore....just protect myself very well against getting bit which includes light colored long sleeved clothing and natural repellants like citronella or eucalytus oils.

Thanks Much for this dialog.

I have taken Larium, and I have taken Malarone, both during dive trips.

I must say that all of us who took Larium experienced unpleasant side effects, though none which were disabling. Mostly it consisted of vivid nightmares. None of us had trouble diving. A couple of us had nausea, but it could have been the food...or the rough waves.

On a separate trip to the same region, Malarone was better tolerated by all. Some of us still had vivid dreams, but not as intense and not as much "hangover" feeling. Less nausea. We also liked the fact that because this drug has a shorter half-life and is taken daily, we could stop it and "get it out of our systems" in the event (a) we developed side effects which would interfere with diving, or (b) there simply weren't any mosquitos. In our case, (b) turned out to be true, and some of us stopped the medication. Interestingly, those who stopped the drug continued to have vivid dreams -- suggesting that vivid dreams may be more a side effect of scuba diving than anti-malarial medication.

Note that this is purely anecdotal, and only involving about 6-8 people. Your experience may vary.
