My G10 is about to be released from Canon repair after flooding it last Christmas day and I am about to purchase a new card. May I know what the maximum memory size works on the camera? I am thinking of getting either a 16 Gb or 32 Gb but I have heard that there is a time lag after taking shots when the capacity is large? I would appreciate your feedback on this.

I don't personally have a G-series, but I know of people who use 16GB cards with them. There shouldn't be a significant difference on read/write speeds for larger cards rated for the same speed, however the cards that have a larger capacity and a good speed rating are expensive.

Thanks, now looking at either 2 x 8gb or 1 x 16gb or 32 gb. Locally a 16 gb sells for $36 but haven't checked the read/write speed.

I would just get 2 transcend 8gb class 10 cards, from neweggs.com they are 25 dollars, and super fast sdhc cards.

I shoot a G-10, always shoot RAW and use mainly 16gb SDHC Class 6 Transcend cards. There is no write delay caused by that card in a G-10. I also have an 8gb Transcend and there is no write delay difference betwixt the two.

There is an argument to be made against "putting all your eggs in one basket" by shooting a single large card and possibly encountering a card problem that costs you a whole vacation's worth of dive shots. Spreading a trip over several 16gb Transcends is a good compromise for me (compared to one or two 32gb cards). Transcend makes a good card, never had a problem with the 4 that I use. // ww

With diving I would think it is a bit more prudent to swap cards between dives. Just incase a flooding happens on a second dive. You still have some pics form the first dive. Granted the flooding would suck. But again you are breaking a good seal if it did it was good on the first dive.

I use the 8gig class 6 cards as well. Bought mine through supermedia for under $20. I like to change cards out after several dives but I then download all the info onto my notebook at the end of the day and burn them onto a dvd as well... then clear off my card. You can't have too many backups! :D

I would go with multiple smaller cards that way you can swap them out between dives, and days. When you work this way you have less of a chance of losing pictures to a flooded housing, data corruption, etc. It also makes it easier to sort the pictures out.

tO be clear, if you flood the camera, the SD card will be fine. Several of mine have been through the wash multiple times. Opening the housing between dives is one more way to make a mistake. I open the housing only to change batteries but change cards then too. Opening the housing to only change a card when cards are so cheap makes little sense to me.

It really depends. I know of cards that have gotten fried when the camera was on when the flooding happened.

Yes I agree, it may not be the best thing to open a housing if the seal proves to be good on the first dive to swap cards. It adds a slightly higher chance of causing a flood.
