Sunday several of us Rhode Islanders did a dive at Ft. Wetherill at the point on the southeastern corner of the left cove. We entered from the cobble beach at the DEM parking lot, not the main Ft. Wetherill lot. We did a dive around the point and then exited at the DEM Pier by Bull Pt.

During the dive we came across a large ship anchor on the the wall. None of us had ever heard of it being there and we dive around there all the time. We talked to the owner of the dive shop in Jamestown afterward, and not surprisingly he knew about it. Still, it doesn't seem to be very well known so I figured I would share the info.

If you want to find it, follow the wall around that point on the 70-75 ft contour. You should come across it if you go far enough. It is pretty heavily encrusted so you may not recognize it at first glance, but it is very large. The tips of the flukes are probably just a little under 4 ft apart.

Should you dive this spot, it can have a pretty stiff current as you come around the point, so you may want to plan it either for slack water or as a drift dive.

Don't believe a word of this tall tall. An anchor at bull point. Yea right. I've heard it all.

Hey good find Chris hope to dive it with you sometime. I think we are diving Thursday night.

Sorry you missed a miserable and intense dive charter session of cape ann Sunday. I still feel woosy. Second dive we dove Burnham ledge (a crack in the ocean floor). I followed my buddies down into it to see my gage reading 120 ft with 3 mins deco left. Said goodbye and made my way back to the anchor. They stayed an extra 15 mins on the hang line.

Hope to see ya soon

Chris

Ive dove around that point many times and have never seen an anchor. Ill have to look better next time. Ive check the tide chart when diving around the point and it never seems to be the same as what i have thought it was going to be.

So I guess I shouldn't bother mentioning the flying saucer wreckage at 60 ft?

I think it should be pretty easy to find again now that I know where it is so I'll drag you over there sometime. Matt didn't see it during that dive because he was too busy staring at the big lobster next to it to notice so he wants to go back as well.

Sounds like your dives were pretty eventful. You'll have to give me the details someday. Seems like you are saying your buddies had to do an emergency deco-stop.... not good! Glad no one got bent!

I have been there many times there myself and had never seen it either. But if you stick at that depth you should be able to find it. You will run into it after you have rounded the point (if starting in the cove). It is pretty well encrusted so you really do need to be paying attention to see it.
