Sunday several of us Rhode Islanders did a dive at Ft. Wetherill at the point on the southeastern corner of the left cove. We entered from the cobble beach at the DEM parking lot, not the main Ft. Wetherill lot. We did a dive around the point and then exited at the DEM Pier by Bull Pt.
During the dive we came across a large ship anchor on the the wall. None of us had ever heard of it being there and we dive around there all the time. We talked to the owner of the dive shop in Jamestown afterward, and not surprisingly he knew about it. Still, it doesn't seem to be very well known so I figured I would share the info.
If you want to find it, follow the wall around that point on the 70-75 ft contour. You should come across it if you go far enough. It is pretty heavily encrusted so you may not recognize it at first glance, but it is very large. The tips of the flukes are probably just a little under 4 ft apart.
Should you dive this spot, it can have a pretty stiff current as you come around the point, so you may want to plan it either for slack water or as a drift dive.
