I'm a new diver, and am interested in seeing some large marine animals in North Carolina. What are the best dive sites to see dolphins, sharks, and rays?

I just went out this weekend with the folks at Discovery Diving in Beaufort. They are very nice folks.... pity I drove all the way from New York for the weather we got last weekend though :P

at least the water was warm :)

yes NC has some mean summer weather . it can change at a moment.

yep.... better luck next time I guess :)

a little storm a brewing as speak.

Lately we've been seeing good number of sharks on the Aeolus..last trip to the Caribe Sea there must have been 50 or more with some in the 10 ft range. I counted more than a dozen simultaneous sightings and they're close enough to touch. For rays you'll have the most luck moving off the wreck a little bit into the sand. Rays usually travel with some company in the form of Cobia which are really neat to look at as well. You will see a fair number of barracuda up close and personal..but don't let them wig you out...they don't eat much ;)

Dolphin rarely come around divers...I didn't say never...but rarely. You'll see them on the surface, but the minute people get in the water, they usually leave.

Hope this helps

It has become common to see some nice sized sand tiger sharks on the Zane Gray.

www.obxdive.com heads out to it weekly
