Ball park & very rounded off figure---$1000++....could be higher, could be lower--------breakdown (& alot could be used equipment)....

Mask, fins, snorkel $125(included in here could be a wt. belt & weights)
Wetsuit(5 to 7mm) $200(included in here could be 5 mm gloves)
Regulators X3 $400(included here could be pressure guage, compass,&depth gauge
tank-you mentioned it $200
booties/hood $ 50
BC(bouyancy compensator)$300

-No computer but that's an option esp for shallow diving(less than 50')--if so $250...
-No light, but if so $75......
All the above as stated could be a little lower(used stuff) and alot higher(new stuff).....My very best advice is to go to online places like Scubatoys.com, Leisurepro.com, Divers Dierct.com,Scuba.com,Divers-supply.com,Diverightinscuba.com,Scubastore.com, and 123scuba.com to name a few....Some places like Scubatoys.com give a 10% discount to Scubaboard members--all you have to do is tell them when ordering anything....It will take a while as all price shopping comparison does.....AND---there are some deals out there to be had right now.....

Good luck in your diving future......

Hi Jax,

The NAUI "trial" is commonly called a "Try SCUBA". If it's with a shop or organization you like and think you'll go back to for certification and gear rental, a *lot* of the time (not all the time) they will subtract the cost of the Try SCUBA (or more likely part of it) from the actual certification course if you continue on to that level. Check with them and see... :)

As far as NAUI vs. PADI vs. SSI vs. SDI, etc...they are all generally regulated in the same fashion and the certification should be somewhat agnostic of the agency with subtle differences along the way. You can buy air with any of these groups' C-Cards. I have found that it's the relationship with the shop that generally provides a more clear picture of the ongoing success of your individual career as a diver. Shops have personalities, so if you find one that suits yours, you'll likely fall into a SCUBA club (which someone prior mentioned and is indeed an EXCELLENT idea), and meet a lot of great people besides.

Good luck and welcome to the sport...!

I found a NAUI school that offers a $45 one day class as like an intro to scuba, so you can see if you might enjoy it before committing to the full class. They supply everything. That eases my concerns of dropping $400 on a class that I know nothing about. Looking forward to that!

I'd recommend doing that. Assuming the NAUI version is basically the same as PADI's Discover Scuba (which it probably is), you'll get introduced to a few of the skills that you do in an Open Water class such as mask clearing and regulator recovery (just in case it comes out of your mouth), but best of all, you get to see what breathing underwater is like. And if you find that you don't like it, or maybe could use some more time in the pool at the YMCA before taking the class, you won't have shelled out the cash for a class you won't enjoy or won't feel comfortable with yet. If you do get the bug though, and decide to go for the class, the beginning will be a bit easier, since you'll have tried alot of it before, and you won't be as nervous as you might have been otherwise.
