Hi everyone,

I would like to plan a dive in Lake Michigan next month and need to know who a good place is to dive with, individual or dive shop. I'm a relatively new OW diver (under a year) and live in central Illinois.

Thanks for any help you all can provide. If there are individuals that would like to buddy up and want to dive that would be great too. Been to Pearl, Haigh and Chille. Would like to do something other than a quarry.

Thanks and weekends are when I can get away!!

[edit: I can't speel either!!!]

I think www.npursuitcharters.com would be perfect for a newer diver. The wrecks on that end of the lake are shallow but fun dives with lots to look at. Cap Mike will take good care of you. After you get acclimated you can move further north into a bit deeper stuff.

Thanks for getting back to me I'll look it up.

Once I figure out a date I'll see if anyone what's to come also. Love to meet some other local divers!!!

The only problem with diving lake michigan is weather. You can plan all you want, but if the lake is kicked up, all is for naught. Door county shore diving is a haul from Illinois, but you can usually find a dive site thats in the lee of the wind. The viz is consistantly good if you go north of about Sister Bay.
Another option is Lender Charters out of Milwaukee with Captain Jerry Guyer. Its a good operation and he regularly goes to some really good wrecks like the Prince Wilhelm(the Willy) and the car ferry Milwaukee. For wreck diving , it doesn't get much better then that.
Best of luck and post a dive report.

Grab yourself a copy of Cris Kohl's The Great Lakes Diving Guide - it's usually available at dive shops in the area or you can order it online. I've found it to be an invaluable resource for diving throughout the Great Lakes, and it's perfect for a new diver seeking a quick overview.

There are a whole bunch of wrecks between Indiana and Milwaukee that are perfectly suited for new divers and fun, too. His book will help you find one that interests you and plan for the future as well.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll post a dive report after I get back from where ever I end up going!!
