Week 5 LA Co ADP 8/3/13 beach dive at White point rocky beach entries and exits and locate underwater thermal vents , surface and use triangulation to map vents then relocate and find them . The other training dive was underwater mapping and survey using lines and grids made of 3' square pvc grids . We placed the grid on the bottom and had to identify and get a count on the sea life within the grid , also noted depth and bottom contour and composition.

Week 6 LA CO ADP 8/10/13 started with 4 hrs of pool training covering search and recovery , search patterns , semi circle , full circle , jack stay , underwater signals , diver to tender , tender to diver ,lift bags , underwater vacuum , then 4hrs of classroom with lectures from coastguard search and rescue and diving physics.

Week 7 LA CO ADP 8/17/13 Night dive at Redondo beach /Vets park underwater nav with compass and natural navigation, pre dive site survey and an acclimation skin dive prior to setting dive float. We did a 30 min swim around at 30 + fsw while marking compass headings , depth changes and natural nav , longshore current , outgoing tidal flow , then we took turns leading the dive team back to the dive float. Next week altitude diving .

Steve,

These are the skills and the knowledge that a diver should possess to be called an "Advanced Diver" and there are much more skills to be mastered and knowledge to be gained before the end of ADP

I suspect that the LA Co ADP has been an eye opener and a challenge for you as it should be.

Keep up the good work!

Steve,
Looking for another LA Co ADP up date ASAP.

It is certainly encouraging that the program is still going strong and has not compromised it's quality and quantity of true advanced dive training.

When you complete the program you can hold your head high and with prde exclaim I am a LA Co ADP Diver!

Week 8 LA Co ADP 9/7/13 final update Altitude/Search and recovery low vis dive training at Lake Castaic. Pre dive briefing covered weight adjustment, ascent rates, decompression, and depth gauge adjustment. We did four training dives that included underwater navigation using transect lines, kick cycle estimation and compass nav, underwater multi tasking while using a saw to cut a piece of wood to make a sign and attach two chain links with staples using a hammer and bolt cutters then tie a section of manila line to each end. Then using 55 gallon plastic pvc drums raise and lower a 200 lb section of steel pipe from 25 ffw , then search and survey using a semi circle search pattern . The object was a mortar that surveyed at 4' long , 8" in diameter and 28 1/2" in circumference which was in 20' ffw. We finished off the day lifting 300 lb concrete table tops using lift bags and then swam them over to the loading ramp to be removed later.

LA CO ADP in eight weeks and over 100 hrs of dive training/instruction , dive planning , dive site evaluation , skin/ocean dives , pool training , video , guest speakers , lectures , rescue , navigation , coastal bathymytry, Triangulation , altitude diving, physics , physiology, long beach aquarium , search and recovery , unconscious diver rescue at depth , breath hold diving etc.

I have passed this course and would like to thank the LA Co ADP program and the LA Co Underwater Unit Instructors and the volunteers that make this a great training program. The bonus of course are the friends and new dive buddies that I made along the way , thanks again.

A huge Congratulations!

Now you can state with pride that you are indeed a TRUE ADVANCED DIVER from the program that started it all and has never comprised it's quality and quantity of instruction as other programs have to a six dive look at me I and a super duper popper advanced diver.

It is my honor to consider you my fellow brother of the underwater world,

Thank you Sam that means a lot coming from you , cheers brother. I am going to volunteer as a safety diver for next year and then hope to take uicc the following year.

Steve,
For many years LA Co ADP had a gala graduation banquet. It was a time for the ADP graduates & staff members, LA Co UW Instructors, past and present, to gather and renew old friendships and welcome the new graduates into the fold.

Was there or will there be a graduation banquet this year? If so who is the guest speaker?

I was the graduation speaker two times. The title of my presentation was "Tradition!" It was a very revealing eye opener! So many did not realize that LA Co was the first to develop just about every program and every thing that is in common usage in diving after all these good and great years - Including the first civilian ADP.

Being first and foremost with out any compromise of quality of training is Tradition of LA Co programs.
As you venture further into the diving world you will soon be confronted by other divers from the alphabet soup of diving instruction who after a few dives claim the title of "Advanced Diver" perpetuating the charade of having advanced knowledge and diving experience.

If you plan on UICC, and I hope you are, now is the time to begin! There is absolutely no compromise in UICC.

Good luck and stay in touch,
SDM

Congrats!! Some day I'll have the time to take this course. I've been eyeing it for many a year.
