Here's your chance to get involved in a great conservation project in Komodo.
Komodo Mooring Buoy Project

Written by Helen Newman
The Komodo National Park Conservation Fund managed by PT Putra Naga Komodo and marine biologist Helen Newman have teamed up to undertake an ambitious mooring buoy project to install permanent moorings around this world renown National Park.
GET INVOLVED IN REAL CONSERVATION
Come and join a real marine conservation project in Komodo, Indonesia.
Aimed at protecting coral reefs from anchor damage by big liveaboard dive boats and visiting yachts, the scheme involves installing environmentally friendly Manta Ray moorings. These moorings are drilled into sand patches or rubble areas and cause minimal damage to the environment, providing a secure anchorage for many years.
We are seeking qualified divers to assist with the installation in what will be an educational and rewarding trip, along with some interesting work. Divers should be experienced and capable of working at 30m and have a nitrox qualification. We will have time for the occasional leisure dive and experienced divers will be on board to assist.
Participants will learn multiple skills from rope splicing to operating an underwater jack hammer. Only 5 spaces are available on each trip.
We hope to film the project for use in other conservation projects and awareness campaigns.
Trip Details;
10th – 18th Feb 07 9 days/8 nights
18th – 26th Feb 07 9 days/8 nights
Cost US$800.00 pp per trip
Price includes all meals, soft drinks, diving, tanks, weights and presentations. Accommodation is air-condition shared cabins on the MV Empress. The boat will depart from Labuan Bajo.

This project is supported by The Komodo National Parks and PT Putra Naga Komodo who are contributing 50% of the project cost. For more information and a project update see the official Komodo website www.komodonationalpark.org
Donors to date include large boat dive operators, Project AWARE Foundation and private individuals. In July/August 2006, the first 15 moorings were installed and all the equipment for an additional 15 moorings purchased. Phase 2 will be the installation of these remaining big boat moorings. Fund raising to complete the project continues with a further US$30,000 required to complete the project. Your contribution will help!
