Thinking of booking the Dancer for December 20-31st. Amazingly, have found upgradeable airfare on Continental. All the omens look good. So, do I commit? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

What weather can I expect the end of December?
How warm is the water?
I hear there can be currents...are these mask-shredding currents or just a pleasant ride?
Anyone have experience with the Komodo Dancer...which cabin(s) do you recommend and why? I'm a light sleeper...is any cabin more quiet than others?

Thanks!!!

Just a bit of hearsay:

I wanna go there too and has been checking out various stuff the Denmark based DS I work for sometimes do tours to komodo and bali.

If I'm not quite mistaken the rains should be over in december - but many of the ops, or lonely planet have general weather patterns listed on their homepages so I would definately check it out. I varies quite a lot in that whole region from what I've been able to see.

As for currents they run between islands and from what I've heard they can be quite strong and unpredictable - but none of my friends have complained about it - nor bragged, which is a good sign ;0).

Plus they're good for bio-diversity. The currents, not the mates.

Have a nice trip - I may beat you to it in august - september.

Hi there,

I was on the Komodo Dancer in July 04. It is a great boat, very stable, good organization, nice staff and great food. They know their dive spots. And the service is fantastic: hot showers and warm towels after diving, shoulder massage included (on some dives the water's very cool and you will appreciate the hot water, especially after the third or fourth dive) and also hot chocolate after the night dive!

The sea in the south was very choppy, we tried to go there (for the Manta spots) but returned to the north soon.

I had a cabin with double bed in the back on the left side but found the bunk bed cabins roomier when I had a look at them.

Have a great time - it was a fantastic trip...

My wife and I were on the Komodo Dancer July 2003, definately the best live aboard we have been on so far. We had only been to the Carribean and wanted to see a new underwater world. Getting to Bali was a bit exhausting...don't go without staying several days on land, it's a beautiful island.
I have a video of the trip on our website at

Can't comment on Komodo Dancer, as we went on Kararu when we were there. But currents can be quite strong, i.e., mask shredding. Assuming your guides have good local knowledge, the strongest currents can be avoided. However, in the north part of the park, the currents bring more fish, including sharks. In the south, the encrusting invertebrates really open up in the current. So you won't want to avoid all current diving.

Komodo Dancer is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!! Best liveaboard I've ever been on. The boat is wonderful and the staff is excellent. The diving is out of this world!!!!!

Hi all

I'll be on a cruise on Komodo Dancer next july :D

this will be my first trip to Indonesia

does anybody know a book where the dive sites of this coming cruise are repertoried ?

Thanks a lot !

believe that the dancer will be heading for Komodo during that period so check out The official website of Komodo National Park, Indonesia. for information about the park and all the dive sites
additional the lonely planet guide to diving indonesia has some information about other areas you may go but is not a compete guide to all of the dive sites available
