Just returned from Palau. Used a Kodak Zi8 with Ikelite housing with a red filter. beats most cameras, footage is superb. Just posted on you tube. check out the quality. Seems better than most of the competition. The camera costs $150 and the housing $250.

Your welcome!

I just went back, noticed you had more videos from Palau and started watching them...

this one gives all the good and bad about these little camcorder rigs...
mid-range with good vis is really pretty good and clear
close up of the anemonefish is not so good
distance shots with poor vis, the mantas, not great

overall, I think this system seems better than the Picsio and Flip for underwater. For divers looking for a portable video rig for not much money, this is definitely the one I will be recommending.

did you find the Kodak zi8 easy to use? what were your general impressions of it?

Hi robin,it is very easy to use. You can"t use the zoom in the housing nor switch to the macro mode, so we were really close to the action. This was my second attempt at underwater videography. i shot some videos in similian islands in dec last year with a sony T100 camera . everything was blue beyond 10 meters. These clips were shot at 15 to 18 meters and have better colour. i think the red filter makes a lot of difference. The red filter comes standard with the ikelite housing. The manta clip was taken by a sony camera, just added it as my friends and son wanted me to add the clip. these videos are just for long lasting memories of the good time we all had together. i want to learn video editing and may join a course here soon, time permitting. I am an orthopaedic surgeon by profession. To our amateur eyes the video seems good enough for the price of the equipment. i have just ordered a wide angle lens for the same.Another reason i used the small camera is that i want to master my buoyancy before spending money on bigger and heavier setups. i have just 27 logged dives. i have a canon 7D. should i get a housing for it or invest in a canon or sony camcorder for future dives?

thanks orthopod4u.

I am shooting a Canon HD camcorder in an Ikelite housing (I am a big Ikelite fan). I am not looking to change that but my husband is an instructor and his students are always asking about my videos, prices of various packages, what would be a good deal for them. He is thinking of buying a smaller, compact video rig, like the Kodak zi8 to use with the students, for teaching and demo. It would give them a good comparison of what you get for under $500 vs my system which is around $2500. I think alot of newer divers, in particular, would be interested in getting it.
