Padipro once bubbled...
G-Lock,

I've always had trouble staying on my knees as well and I've been diving for years. I found that being on one knee and having my other foot out in front of me with that knee bent worked much better for me. It seems to give me more control over my movements and as an Instructor it gave me the ability to move quicker if I needed to assist a student because I could push off with the foot in front of me in the direction I needed to go.

Just my 2 cents.

Scott

Being horizontal in front of your students makes for the quickest response. You just flip a fin and your instantly right there.

kneeling is for church and proposals.

I think the solution is for students to learn buoyancy control first thing so the kneeling can be got rid of as soon as possible. Or maybe not used at all.
In G-lock's case, if I had taught him, (for basic safety and CYA) reg recover and clearing and then immediately gone into buoyancy control, he could have done all the skills if not perfectly horizontal, at least floating on his fin tips. It's very difficult to have new students horizontal in 4 feet of water early on, so this could be an incremental step to that. I intend to try it in my next class.
