I'm currently stationed in Iraq, so I have limited internet use.

Planning a vacation (July) through travel agent back home (Texas). Have stayed at: '05 Amy Slates & '06 The Islander Resort.

Agent is recommending either:
Hawks Cay or
Key Largo Grande Resort (formerly Sheraton).

Please provide feed back about these two resorts. Wife doesn't dive, she hated Amy Slates. Wife and kids loved The Islander Resort. Both kids dive, (Cody 14 & Kristen 17).

Kids hate driving very far in the morning to go diving (they like to sleep in), which does give Hawks Cay a plus since a dive operator is on site.
Wife and kids love playing in the water: swimming pools, beaches, etc.

Any good dive ops with-in walking distance to Key Largo Grande Resort?

Thanks for all your help.

My wife and daughter just came back from staying in Hawks Cay for a few days and they both liked it, but recommend that you stay in the sunset villas and not in the hotel. however, the resort is isolated and need to drive 20 minutes to go anywhere. Key Largo Grande is a hotel resort, the service is not great, but you are minutes from restaurants and have a good selection of dive operators with a great variety of dive locations. Hawks Cay does not have a beach. The Marriott in Key Largo also has a beach, pool and has a diving operator in site.

I have stayed several times at Key Largo Sheraton (now under new management). It has typical Sheraton rooms (nice, not spectacular, but the water view rooms have nice view), a decent restaurant, good pool and (for Key Largo) a very nice little white beach with water sports (waveriders, etc) on site. I dive out of Ocean Divers (mm 100), three miles and an easy drive from Sheraton (mm 97). I am going again in several weeks. You won't go wrong there... I hear Marriott is very nice, too, but may be pricier (although rates for the Grande seem higher than the old Sheraton rates). In Key largo you have to drive almost everywhere, but not very far to get what you want or need.

Thanks for the information. I let my kids make the decision. We're booking today with Key Largo Grande Resort (14July-21July) and will use Silent World for diving.

I really appreciate the responses. Internet access is not easy over here and it runs very slow due the all the scans on the system.

Good choice on Key Largo Grande Resort. Great place if you have kids. They will love it there. Nice little beach but the whole resort is set right in the middle a "Key Larog forest" with a boarded walking trail through it. Very beautiful and the rate is lower than the Marriott.
