We are going to be arriving in roatan on the 25 of Jan. They say honduras is not safe right now. What should we do or not do? Please be honest and tell us so we can better be prepared. Thank you.

I have been to Roatan for the last four years and never had a problem. I think most of the problems are on the mainland of Honduras, not Roatan. Are you flying straight to Roatan or going thry Pedro Sula? My suggestion is to just use common sense as you would anywhere else. Stay aweay from the "bad" areas especially at night. I always stay at Barefoot Cay and never felt unsafe, but I don't leave there to go out at night.

Honduras might indeed be a bad place to be an attractive sheep.

The Bay Islands arguably are not Honduras, in so very many respects.

Causal visitors to the Bay Islands have so far gotten away safely. So far, the "random" crime between un-related individuals doesn't exist. When the day comes that this truism expires, all of the doomsayers will have a field day.

When personal crime has occurred previously on the Bay Islands, many come here and are quick to point out the perils of these islands. After the truth comes out, that the actors were related by a love triangle, a business deal (legal or not), or just a fight over a chicken.... that doesn't mollify the fright caused by a goofy post.

Stay away from bars. Do not appear to be attracted in any way to a local or long-term resident. Do not drive a vehicle of any sort. Stay on the resort or stick to tourist areas. Wear DEET.

RickyF is right. if you want to be in the most secure place, pick an isolated AI that is off of the main island.

If you are scared, stay home. That's your DNA kicking in. Follow your instincts.

The issues are on the mainland and not in the Bay Islands.
That being said - follow Roatanman's advice.

I've been to Roatan, I always go to local bars (west end), I always rent a car, I always drive around, I always get off the resort. I've never had a problem. I don't do any of this at 2:00am nor do I advertise being a tourist or walk around with a $4000 camera around my neck.

I would not vacation anywhere where I had to follow that advice, why would anybody go on vacation somewhere with those restrictions in order to be safe?

First off I agree completely with Roatanman when he say's

No need to worry about things, Just go someplace else but as mentioned, the bay Islands are quite a different animal than the mainland, My watchman, A mainlander on Roatan for about twenty years is not comfortable travelling through San Pedro or Cieba and insists he goes with meif I have business on the mainland.
As far as the thing about sticking to resorts, wel lif your just there to dive thats fine I guess but I tend to want to visit destinations, I live in Florida most of the year and if I wanted to spend all my vacation time with a bunch of other North Americans why would I bother to even travel? I drive a lot on Roatan, have for many years without any real problems, even dealt with an accident that was a non issue, I am seldom in tourist areas at all, was in West End last year a few hours to meet someone, never seen West Bay except in pictures. Sure, I now have more insight than many but it all started somewhere but back to the very best advice, if scared then go elswhere

:snicker: Ever heard of "Tongue-in-Cheek"? I think Roatan is being facetious. :dontknow:

Actually, if you read the bold blue stuff, Hmm, reminds me of a PADI manual and look through the many posts over the years on this type of thing Roatanman has been quite consistant in his advice and it is good advice for some. If you stay away from the local bars you are less likely to partake in festivities amongst those with ill intent, if you never drive you are likely not to be the cause of an accident, if you never befriend a local you are likely never to have a problem with their friends or family , But then again if you never leave home you are highly unlikely to ever have any problems while travelling

i guess they don't make em tough in the u.s. peace corp anymore. ridiculous, my 74 yr mother just traveled the country by bus and had a delightful time.

The sad thing is there are actually a lot of people especially those traveling with kids, but still many without who do actually vacation exactly as described. The only time they see anything other than what's in the walls of their resort is on the mini bus from the airport and back again. They might as well go to the moon for a vacation if they had a glass enclosed bio sphere with a beach there, they wouldn't know the difference.
