Sounds reasonably Darwinian. If enough idiots make enough mistakes they will eventually eliminate themselves from the gene pool!!

I have no problems with this guy removing *himself* from the gene pool, but I have considerable problem if its a 9 year old boy that gets removed....

I found out when calling around for a shop to do my son's OW dives in the keys, that many will not cert or let children under 12 dive. I don't blame them. Eventhough the agency might let a 10 yo get a C card, the LDS doesn't have to follow the agency's rule. And for good reason.

I give the guy credit to be able to teach his own son, let us hope his son survives. I can't seem to teach my daughter anything, she will not listen to me, I'm hoping to get her into the jr open water class this spring. I am very confident in the instructor I found for her class.

My daughter is 9. I often swim on the surface and let her breathe off of my octo. She loves it, and she's a hell of a snorkeler, too. Still, when I look at her size, attention span, maturity level, and ability to deal with complex concepts, I'm pretty sure we're going to wait 'til she's at least 12.

I have no problem getting my son certified when he was 11 and having my 9y/o dive under controlled situations. Many of their school projects revolve around diving now and they have a higher interest in their science and math classes now (mainly if their grades start slipping they can't dive).

As somebody else said, if he hurts his child I'd take it personally. It's one thing to remove yourself from the gene pool, quite another to take an innocent.

My 8 yr old daughter wants to dive as well. For now I have picked up a SAS unit & her & her 5 yr old brother get to play in the pool looking at goldfish. I just refill the 6cf bottle from one of my tanks. They feel like they are diving with me while i'm on the bottom. I feel the guidelines are in place for a reason.

There are reasons for why children who are that young should not dive.

-Lack the maturity in most cases to handle and solve problems underwater. (many adults still have this problem)

-Nobody really know if hyperbaric pressure affect growth, development etc. We say no to pregnant women for the same reason.

To the OP, there isn't much you can do unless it causes harm. Its a free country and idiots can be idiots, even with thier families.

Maturity might occur in a few rare 9 years old. But for most of us, it doesn't occur until after 26 - find a first job, maintaining good credit rating, etc.

I almost think, a C card for most kids under 18 is a learner's permit.
