We are planning a trip and bringing our 10 year old. What is the best resort for children with a kids program? Thanks for the info.

All of the AI's have kids clubs.

Cozemeleno
Melia
Cozumel Palace
Reef Club
Allegro
Occidenal Grand
Iberostar
Park Royal

I could be missing some, but those are a start. The nicest (and most expensive) on his list are Occidental grand and Cozumel Palace.

I've never traveled to Cozumel with kids so I don't have first-hand experience, but a couple things I've heard more then once from diving parents are that most of the organized children's programs don't start until around 10am, which depending on who you dive with is just too late. There are also some who want at least one parent on the property while the kids are in the program.

When you're checking out resorts and their programs, keep that in mind and make sure to ask the right questions before you book, especially if you are both divers.

We have stayed at Coz Palace and Hotel Cozumel. While the Palace is much nicer, the Hotel Cozumel is much more kid friendly.

Add Fiesta Americana to the list. I think it's great for toddlers since both pools have shallow areas for the little ones. However, I would think a 10 year-old would enjoy having a beach which, unfortunately, Fiesta Americana does not. We've not used the kids club because our daughter isn't old enough but I've heard good things about it.

I've also heard good things about Iberostar's kids program and they also have a traditional beach.

We've also stayed at Allegro, which had an awesome beach but the kids program didn't look to be operational... this may have changed since last June but I'm not sure I'd recommend Allegro.

Although you didn't ask, it's true what scubawife says.... the free/included kid's programs are not intended to babysit your children while you dive. They expect that you stay on the property in case your child misbehaves. Dedicated child care runs from $5 to $10 per hour which ironically comes out to be the same price if you had to pay for them to go diving with you!

Don't hesitate to bring your child and expose them to the wonderful culture and people of Mexico. It'll be our daughter's third trip to Cozumel in September and she's not even 2 yet and already speaks Spanish and loves guacamole and carne asada!

A couple years back before our son was old enough to attend the kids' club at the Occidental Grand, we hired a baby sitter through the resort. She was one of the kids' club employees and did a very good job. A bit pricey though (for Mexico) - $10/hour - but worth it to go diving.

I was at the Hotel Allegro the first week of July and they definitely had a kids program going, with its own play area, plus they were using one of the pools and the beach.

And that is one big plate of guacamole Driftin By!
