I am going to Key West this spring. What is the best reef/dive site on the island (preferably reef)?

Spring is a good time to come. I think May and June are may faves. Lost Reef is one of my favorite reefs, but the boats don't go there that often because it is further out. The opporators will try to take you where the conditions have been best. Of the closer sites I like 9ft stake and Rock Key. If they take you to Western Sambo, try to dive the west end (ball 16 I think) there are many isolated star corals. They call them the hay stacks. If they take you to Sand Key shoot for the grand canyon (ball 12 I believe).
I see that you are new to the board (welcome) and reletively new to diving. These will be good dives for you. The majority of our reefs are shallow (20-25 feet) and are easy to navigate.
Keep in mind that we are planning on sinking the Vandenburg as an artificial reef towards the end of April. You may not be ready for a dive such as this at that time, but I do think you should be aware of this as I expect that most of the charters will be running trips to her and less strictly to the reef. www.bigshipwrecks.com

How deep will the V be?
The V-burg is BIG. It will be 140' to the sand, but the tower will be about 40'. check out the web page www.bigshipwrecks.com . This will be a multiple dive wreck.

I have dove 5 or 6 sites in key west. They are all pretty much the same except the wrecks. If you want to dive reefs your better off in the upper Keys. The only wreck there I have dove is the Caymen so for what its worth.
