I'm a Fish!
Hi Guys,

I will be down at the Naval Submarine base in Point Loma SD in June, and was wondering where I should go for some good "Kelp bed" diving. I will be bringing my underwater HD rig, and would like to get some good shots of swaying kelp. I would like something in the 60' range, but maybe some kelp around a wreck in deeper water would be good too.

I'm Trimix certified, so depth isn't an issue, but I would rather have some ambient light.

In San Diego, the Lois Anne boat usually schedules a bunch of "Kelp dives" but I am not sure exactly what that means.

If you come a bit North, then Casino Point on Catalina Island is easily accessible, fits the kelp and ambient light defn and has some really nice kelp.

ALso, there are plenty of spots around the Island with awesome kelp. Ship rock if the flies and current are not out has some awesome kelp possibilities (and schools of fish) from 70 and shallower and really nice ambient light.

Due to conditions, the kelp can "move around" as it dies off in one place and regrows in others, so best to check back closer to the time probably.

Mike, Check this website for local San Diego dives. The Coronados or San Clemente Islands may fit your need for kelp very nicely.

Thanks for all the great info and links. Anyone here want to "Show me around" the good dive spots when I'm down there? I won't have a dive buddy, and I'd rather dive with someone experienced (Not a DM escorting a nuclear family with 2.5 kids ;))

Thanks alot

Ping nearer the time. I may have trips to mx and/or red sea around that time.
I also dont know SD very well.

You will need to go by boat to get that kind of depth anywhere except la Jolla Shores, and there ain't no kelp there. If the visibility is good (usually is in June) then right off the point will get you great kelp. If there is a swell running you will do better heading out to Los Coronados. Update us with the dates and maybe something can be arranged if I'm not racing and the honey-do list isn't to long.
