My family and I just got OW certified in Catalina on Halloween weekend. We're planning to stay on the southern edge of Kauai this summer, just up the road from the Grand Hyatt Kauai. My wife would feel more comfortable diving with a local company to help point out some of the local dive sites. Does anyone have any suggestions about companies, or best places to dive on that side?

I'd look closer at Fathom Five or Seasport Divers - both are in the Poipu area as is your resort. Explore Kauai Scuba is off in Waimea - a short drive west. Also EKS dives off a fixed hull RIB - Seasports has a Pro 48' with dual ladders and hot showers and a smaller 32' boat.Fathom Five has mostly six-packs so dive groups on them go as 6 plus DM(s). Your choice...

Do shore dive Koloa Landing nearby - either with a paid guide or on your own. It's an easy, shallower dive with a lot of interesting things to see. No real need to get out of the bay. Also an easy entry - an old boat ramp leads right into the water. The other good summer dive is Tunnels Beach on the north shore - Jeannette, Fathom Five's owner is one of the best guides for that. Do it guided so you don't miss any of the "Tunnels"

A good, easy boat dive is Sheraton Caverns - a series of colllapsed lava tubes with big turtles living there. Fast Lanes is another good boat dive - easier than the name indicates. Some of the better boat dives are listed oon Fathom Five's site: » Dive Kauai - I don't believe you can shore dive Ahukini anymore - the fishermen had it closed to divers a couple years ago. Mostly the shop you dive with will pick the sites based on the best conditions that day - or give you options accordingly.

I'm planning to jump over to Kauai for an extended Thanksgiving weekend and have been looking at diving with Bubbles Below Kauai. Been thinking of shore diving at Mana Crack on the west coast for our first day (Friday) since we're staying at the PMRF Barking Sands cabins. Would love to go on a triple dive day on Saturday. Might Niihau be calm enough to pass over this late in the season?

Bubbles Below is your best option for Ni'ihau because:
the distance between islands is 17 miles and is consistently do-able May thru Sept/October. However, there are “Weather Windows” throughout the remaining months. We offer the service of watching those ‘windows’ of opportunity and are now offering the trip in the “Off-Season”,
I'm pretty sure the Poipu based boats don't even try after late Sept. Seasport stops then till May.

I've gone with Fathom Five every Kauai trip for the past 10 years (5 trips). Always professional, always friendly.
