I just don't know what to say....sorry for everyone's loos just isn't adequate. I'll keep everyone in my prayers. Rick, I'm glad you and Janet are OK and thanks so much for these report. I hope FredT and Jeanne got out of Pass Christian OK.

Thank y'all for your prayers and thoughts... I will pass them along to the other old fart who sent me the report. (I reckon I should have been clearer that I was passing along an eye-witness report from a friend)
The Lovely Young Kat & I are in Montgomery and had zero damage (other than the dogs tracking some mud in the house :) ) - so I am looking at ways to help the folks down there.
We want to load up the Suburban and head down there, but that would be counterproductive. One of the hardest things for us is to let other folks "do it."
But at this stage of the game all we really can do that will help instead of hinder is to make ourselves and our treasure - whether that be money and/or supplies and/or some time - available to those who are in charge of the relief efforts. So I recommend calling the Red Cross or the Salvation Army (or the relief agency of your choice - I know the Southern Baptist Convention is another that's actively involved). My choice is the Salvation Army, but any of 'em would do.
And pray.
Rick

Fred et al are in Oklahoma with family. No word on their place in Pass Christian.

Does anyone know if or to what extent Denham Springs, LA was affected? It's about 85 miles North-West of New Orleans. I know somebody there who evacuated before the storm.

Crikey. I am sorry for all of you who have suffered losses. I know firsthand how devastating flooding can be, and how helpless you feel when it happens to your home and changes your life as you know it. (I lost my house to flooding this past April). There are just no words.
Watching the news last night just sucked the life right out of me, I can't imagine what it's like to be there. Such a beautiful city. I am not a praying woman, but will do my best for them.

Nehallenia:
Good to know you are OK - I have been wondering.

Thanks for the sentiment. My family is now scattered all over creation waiting for the chance to return to the New Orleans area, but at least we're all OK.

My plans have changed- On standby waiting to go offshore. Initial report from my boss last night confirmed what I expected...Some very heavy damage to our platforms, but at least they are still there.

Rick, thank you for passing on that report... if only the news people could
get their stuff together and do this kind of observation.. well.. anyway...

things are looking real bad in New Orleans. the two levee breaks can't be
contained. they're looking to get everyone out immediately. there are
dead bodies floating in water, and obviously, this is a serious disease problem.

haven't had much contact with my sister, other than two phone calls that
have gotten through (one to her, one from her). she's doing fine, bummed out,
but dealing with it.

her house is almost certainly gone

oilman - little late probably, but I heard of some people getting into the Westbank via River Road from the West(possibly by I-310, maybe even further down?).

Thanks for the info, but at this point, I'm not so sure that returning to Belle Chasse is such a good idea. I did get some second hand info that BC faired OK... Not as much flooding, the homes,on the whole are ok, but several business were hammered and pretty much the lower half of Plaquemines parish is in ruins, especially Venice. But this is all unofficial. Guess I'll know soon enough.

I heard BC made out ok as well, but there were some nado's through there that caused alot of wind damage. Haven't heard much more than that though...

All remaining New Orleans citizens are being evacuated, they say there will be a break in another levy on the Eastern Shore of New Orleans. Gonna put hundreds more homes UW. I feel for em.

My family is spread out over the country now too.

Someone (Chickdiver?) suggested trying cell phone text messaging. That seems to work much better in intermittent conditions since the system just keeps trying to send until it gets through.
Worth a try.
