We're going to Kapalai in a couple of weeks and was wondering about the shore diving there. Is walking across rocks involved, or is it off a pier into deeper water? Basically I want to know which fins to bring - full foot or open heel.

Kapalai sits on a sand bar. Unless things have changed drastically, there are no rocks. If you are shore diving, you dive off the pier either by jumping in or climbing down a ladder.

Enjoy your trip to Kapalai, WyCal. Diving is wonderful and so are the evening sunsets....Its paradise on earth.....

Thanks a lot. This is a "work" trip with a side trip to Kapalai thrown in. We're counting the days.

You lucky bugger....Bring your UW camera! Vis at kapalai is usually not good. However, the amount of macro life you will see will astound you.

Open Heel and Booties for sure.....apart from your boat dives to Sipadan/Mabul.....the house reef dives involve "rolling" of the tiny pier right at the Dive center. I have never had it so easy.

Definitely bringing the camera, ports, strobes, etc. even if it means not having a change of clothes. You gotta have priorities!

Hahah....I wore the same thing for 5 days! Mainly cause when I was out and about....I had the same swim shorts on and nothing else. It is certainly paradise on earth!

50/60mm macro and diopter is the most important thing I would have on ALL dives at Mabul/Kapalai. All your dives at Sipadan will involve a single boat trip out to Sipadan Island.....the surface interval will be on Sipadan itself. Then, the boat comes back for you to take a break before they take you nearby for a Mabul/Kapalai Boat dive.....alternatively, the Mabul and Kapalai dives will come first.

As such, if you must switch between Macro and WA lenses and ports, you can do it at leisure at the resort. Vis is so bad that I don't know how well 100mm would suit conditions. I am just picking up using a DSLR for UW use and have not tried it there yet. The pictures I posted here was using a DX-1G and a single strobe and taken in Mabul/Kapalai/Sipadan.

I would advise that you try get in on the EARLY morning dives at Sipadan. Vis and fish activity are much better then. It is also when the Bumphead parrotfish school nearby at the drop off. I was also lucky enough to spot 3 large oceanic hammerheads too at 40m!

Thanks for the info. I have my shirt all picked out that I'm taking with me :D

I was planning on shooting WA at Sipadan and changing to 60mm macro for the afternoon Kapalai/Mabul muck diving.
Looks like I'll be up at the crack of dark for those 0530 trips to Sipadan.
