I'm researching where to stay in Kadavu and Yasawa and I'm thinking about Waisalima Beach Resort and Matana Beach Resort and Tilivia Resort in Kadavu, and Wayalailai or Octopus Resort in Yasawa? I'm wondering what would you recommend and about the food. Also, we're going there to dive (I'm a beginner, but my boyfriend has a lot of experience) and I'm wondering if 5 days on each island is good, is there really a lot to do besides the diving and laying on the beach / How about the evenings?

I worked on Kadavu for 3 months ending in Feb this year, the diving there was epic...make sure you pick a resort who goes to do the manta ray dive...it's a must do.
I wouls stay away from Matana Resort/Dive Kadavu, the dive operation although well staffed needed a bit of fine tuning. Waiselima is ok but unfortunatly built on an old swamp which makes the mosquitos unbarable. Matava Resort might be worth looking into and I heard that there is a new resort being built as well. Matana Resort/Dive Kadavu was a nice place to stay with a beuatiful beach out front and decent boats...the dive sited on the south side were very close (10min) and there were a few other sites worth doing like Sea Fan Alley which are about 1 hour by boat. As I said the Manta ray dive on the inside of the Astrolabe is a must do as we saw upwards of 8 mantas on one dive at a time.
PM me if you would like some more info.

OK, i get to have a ***** about this because ive always kept my mouth shut.. but my honest opinion - do not go to Octopus Resort, anywhere else would have to be better.

We went there last July. Despite reservations and booking receipts and emails, we get there wondering why they didnt pick us up. Get to the office to be told they dont have our reservation. They managed to find us some accomodation BUT...

we booked for 10 nights and only got 4 nights on the island (actually, it was 10, then 4, then 8 then back to 4 nights, the booking staff are really really bad).

each day, people are changing bungalows because the booking staff dont know their backsides from their... well you get the idea, so people had to contstantly repack their stuff and move to a new bungalow. At least we got to meet new people this way i suppose.

there is a dive shop of sorts on the island, but... we were assured nitrox (none), we were told DIM fittings (yoke) and we were told they had a dive boat (long boat actually) with 4 schedules dives a day (ended up being 2).

One of their DM's broke my hubby's regulator and his camera gear never got unpacked because he was afraid for it to get damaged.

at octupus, the food is included in your package - but its very basic (not bad food though) and you could tell the people that had been at the resort for a few days because they always got there an hour before lunch to get the "specials" before they ran out. My personal trainer was quite impressed by the weight i lost during my stay.

the staff are very savy on what you have and hit you up for stuff... now, i travel every year to the tropics, i know that we have alot of "things" and they live their lives very basic. In fact, we always travel with the idea that we will leave as much behind for the locals as possible (clothes, batteries, toiletries, bags etc) but it got to a point i was avoiding 2 staff members and counting my things after my room was cleaned - and ive never done that before in my travels!

now, the diving - at best was "ok"...nothing wow, nothing "lets go look at that again'.

you ask about the nightlife... absoultley none - but hey, we actually like that. the highlight was when the put a big white sheet up on the beach, and a projector and played the Australia v's Fiji Rugby during the World Cup and handed out popcorn - now that was a fantastic night! That was our best night there. There were some planned fun evenings but this involved crab races and party games.

we came home, put a insurance claim in - got some money back and booked for Vanuatu (our 4th trip there).

if i had to go to Fiji again, i would look at Kadavu.

best of luck and let us know what you decided on!

Hi: Well I highly recommend both destinations......but on Kadavu there is another resort you might want to consider - Papageno resort. It has a great divemaster, new boat, wonderful organic food and good hiking and other activites. The diving on Kadavu is really great. Entertainment at night in both areas is limited to meccas or kava parties and singing and dancing with the fijians. Octopus Resort has a gorgeous beach and good diving the food is a good....just a little more basic than Papageno......but you can't beat the rates at Octopus Resort. If you need a quote on both of these properties or Matana and Tilivia....I would be happy to provide....or just give advice. My email is dolphinadventures2004@yahoo.com.

Thanks,
Mary Jane

Bula kennels!

I traveled Fiji last summer for 18 days, 10 of them on Kadavu. My wife and I really enjoyed Dive Kadavu, in fact I proposed to her there :)

My only complaint about them would be the quality of the rental gear available. However, we took ALL our own gear so we never had to actually use any of it. Perhaps sharkmasterbc could post additional info on what he thought needed fine-tuning? Other than the rental gear the dive operation was solid, and I cannot tell you how awesome the diving is in Fiji...you'll have to see it with your own eyes.

As for the resort, the bures were plain but comfortable; the food was good but kinda repetative; the location was excellent, with a nice beach and great snorkeling. The staff was really friendly: Bob & Rena went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. I have some pics of the trip located here:
