Gathered the wagons at B.K. yesterday a.m.. Discussed the ongoing pain in the back side in regards to parking (or the lack of it), ugly attitudes towards divers from the locals @ Rockp. & Glouc. sites and decided to seek out a new spot.
Well, out comes Jerry Shines book on Shore Diving New England ( a very good reference by the way) and we decide on Chandler Hovey Lighthouse Park, Marblehead.
A short drive later and we find a very nice spot indeed, complete with parking!!!!!
A quick peek around and we suit up, easy entry, very nice dive and bugs to chase.
I was primarily working on my skills with my new dry suit but grabbed a few critters in the process.
After a very tiring return surface swimm against a mild but still present current, I look up from my 4 point position to see "Officer Green" heading our way. I toss my catch bag, fins, hood up in front of me and take my time to catch my breath at the waters edge. Here it comes:shakehead " Got a permit?"I answer in the affirmative and offer to produce it in just a moment, "No problem, take your time", WOW maybe a decent guy just doing his job. "Mind if I check those bugs while you catch your breath", I say not really but I havn't had a chance to double check them at the waters edge and I may have one that is questionable---True colors now unfold---"They are on the shore now and I'll be the next one to check them."
Yup, a short one (1/16 of an inch), I offer to return it to the water and "Not yet, I need to photograph it" :shakehead .
Well the $100.00 fine was bad enough but the complete line of insulting b.s. that followed was totally uncalled for:confused:
"Officer Green" proceeds to tell us that a caller said we were raiding pots, (not my style at all) and says he believes his source and that we could make his job easier if we would just stay home.:mooner: He continues his intimidations with the riot act about next time we would be considered criminal and arrested and our gear confiscated.
Pisser day::dry suit takes me for a number of rides, squeezes the heck out of me and leaves me wondering why this is better than diving wet. A lobster gets me a good one. I run low on air, have to swimm my *** off to get back, Get busted by the EPA, get harrassed by a little jerk with a big attitude and become bummed enough to call it a day!!!!!
Please someone tell me this is not the begining of a trend:shakehead

Ah well, if you can look back on that as being your worst scuba day ever, then things aren't all that bad.
Too bad about the pissy EPA guy though. Call his superior officer and complain about him. It probably won't make any difference, but you never know.

Daniel Powter has a song for you....:D

That blows...... I wonder how someone on the surface could even have a clue if a pot was being raided anyway!

How was the site anyway? I have that book....sounds interesting. I wouldnt mind checking it out.

The site is really nice. Picture perfect New England harbor and coastline. Pretty lawns,
parking (not a huge lot but most visitors turn over pretty quickly) bathrooms and coin operated telescopes. Easy entry, lots of rocks and crabs and bugs, though most were just under. Huge star fish. Average depth @ 25-30'. Conditions can change pretty quickly while under. I entered into a very calm water and found a obvious cross current and some chop when coming in. Real nice dive. I'll do it again. :D :D

Daniel Powter? This is against my better judgment but what would that song be?

It's called "Bad Day." It's #16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ah yes, quite on target, Thank You. Please excuse my skepticism, I suppose I was bracing for the occasional good nature shots....Peace

The EPO was obviously a non-diver among other things. Some of those fellows are a bit draconian. Others are great guys that are reasonable and use common sense. You just got one of those guys whose biggest pinch of the month was grabbing a 19 year old kid fresh water fishing w/o a license.

I'm not a cop-basher(for sure), but let's get real....his 'source' said you were trap-raiding? What does the 'source' have an u/w camera hooked up to all the traps in the area? Appeal the ticket/fine to a judge @ the local district court. Apologize, throw yourself at the mercy of the court and say you're a law-abiding citizen/lobster diver who doesn't take shorts. You were about to re-check them when the EPO came along, you've learned your lesson and it won't happen again. If you do appeal it, no matter what you do, don't bad-mouth the EPO even if you'd like to...most judges don't appreciate that.

Good luck and sorry that happened to to you. Lesson learned, though, I bet.

Be careful about apologizing, I found out the hard way apologizing is an admission of guilt.

But don't pay the fine and tell them that the guy grabbed them from you as you were rechecking them and thats if you weren't already made to pay the fine.
