Hi everyone,

Back in June I thought I would try out this UW photography thing, so I did some research and got some gear. But I never actually managed to use it at all until this past week (not even get it wet in a pool)!!

As this is a milestone moment for me, and has confirmed my love for what I think will be a very long (and expensive!!!) obsession, I thought I would share some highlights from my first ever experience of underwater photography with you fine people.

All constructive criticism appreciated! :)

Very nice indeed. Welcome to an expensive and addictive hobby.

If that's your first attempt, I look forward to seeing what you'll do with a little practice! :D

Where were they taken? And what equipment were you using?

Thanks CamC! I was honestly surprised at the results myself, and put it down more to the quality of the gear than the quality of the photographer (it really was nowhere near as difficult as I imagined).

Sony RX100 in a Nauticam, twin YS-D1 and WA/Macro wet lenses.

I think my decision to get a decent setup from day one (rather than incremental upgrades with beginner gear) was a wise one.

And oh, taken in Mabul/Sipadan area.

I'm just jealous! I went for some very basic gear to start with - primarily for cost reasons - and I was happy enough with the fairly basic results that I not-unexpectedly got. Until, of course, I see what I could have done. I look forward to seeing your next lot.

Thats some pretty darn good shots.
Problem with this hobby is that youre going to want to replace that cybershot with a dslr or mft at some point when you feel youve reached the limits of the compact - and then its gonna cost an arm and a leg (and probably atleast 1 dive vacation) :p

Excellent shots.

My only criticisms are;

The second shot of the Xeno crab should be in portrait not landscape, similarly with that last shot of the blenny.

The Chromodoris lochi should have been taken from the front end to show the rhinophores, always get as close as you can and try to avoid cutting off any parts of the critter if possible.

And +1 on what Tigerman says

I just have to "lol"... I was going to post a very similar thread as I just got my camera underwater too. Then I clicked on this thread and you've almost got every single shot the same as I've got haha The quality of work is also pretty similar, so I'll go against what these folks have said about wanting to change to a dslr. I'm using a very high end dslr and I'd put your work up against mine any day. Great work :)

Searcraigh: I never realised I got the nudi you mentioned back to front until you pointed it out!!! I genuinely thought that was the front end haha!
