Just got back from Sipadan after spending 5 days diving there.
It was fantastic despite the weather and water condition.
I stayed at Smart Dive Resort with 7 other friends in the group.
Visibility around Sipadan was may be only 15-20 meters the first 10 meters or so but got worse as we descent. However I am happy to reported that the schools of Barracuda are back at Barracuda Points. There were also plenty of white tip reef sharks there as well. At Turtle Patch, we ran into a school of Jacks that must have numbered in the thousands. A group that shared a boat with us went into Turtle cavern and on the way out claimed that they saw a thresher shark briefly at the mount of the cavern.
Currents were very mild except on our second dive at Barracuda Point. At the end, when we got to the shallow around 3-4 meters, there were about 10 white tip sharks there and we all had to hold on to a rock to stay and watch those sharks until we ran out of air.
Mabul and Kapalai were a nice contrast to Sipadan with the abundance of macro life. Visibility was anywhere from 5-10 meters, may be a little more here and there. There were plenty of stone fish, frog fish, nudibranch, shrimps, crocadile fish, blue ribbon eels, seahorse etc. On our first dive, check dive at Kapalai, we even saw a Flamboyant Cuttlefish. Our dive master, Ben was excellent. I don't know how he managed to find everything. A couple of friends brought a magnifying glasses with them so they can see all the things that Ben showed to us.
The weather was so so. We had rain a couple of days otherwise it was mostly overcast.
Even with relatively poor visibility and weather, the dive were still so great. A friend and I started to talk about a plan to come back next year around April/May when the visibility supposed to be much better.
According to our DM, August will be a bit better as visibility will generally improve but with stronger currents so the first 7-8 meter might be a bit more murky but at deeper level, the visibility will improve.
I will post some pictures from the trip in the photography section later on today.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR UPDATE, I'M INTENDING TO GO OUT MID/END AUGUST AND STAY WITH SMART DIVERS SO THIS IS OF REAL HELP TO ME

Got a website?

What is their website URL?

Perhaps there is another operator called Clever Divers? (joke)

Very disapointed to hear about the bad viz. - thought it was good during most of the dry season !
Any idea as to the likely conditions in September / October ?

Here is a link to the Smart Dive resort on Mabul.

The visibility sounds kind of bad but I was rather surprise at how much I enjoyed the dive. In the similar condition at Pattaya or Koh Tao, I would say that the dive was awful but around Mabul and Kapalai, there were so much to see, especially the macro stuff that I hardly looked very far from where I was.
I still plan to go back there again for sure, hopefully at a better time of the year. However, I would not hesitate to go back there tomorrow if I have the time and the money to spend, given the condition and the visibility. Not sure about the condition in Sep/Oct but I think the wet season there is October/November so the sea could be a bit rough.

Just return from Sipadan at 7/22. Before went to Sipadan, I read ssra30's article about the fair water condition and wish I can get some luck for my first diving trip. But I didn't get it enough :p

7/18, 19: Rained hard around 5:00am. Morning dive visibility about 7~10m. Sometimes the visibility is so poor at first 10m that I was feeling I'm diving in a murky hot spring....When we went down to 20~30m, visibility is improved, around 10~15m, some places like Barracuda Point can get 15~25m visibility but with current around 5 knots.
7/20: Clear sunny day. Visibility is good, 30m or so. But in West Ridge at 10:00 am, another hot spring dive
7/22: Visit Mt. Kinabalu. What a beautiful scenery! :)

According to DM, barracuda school shows up arround 2:30pm at Barracuda Point. We dove there for 4 times and I was so impressed by those elegant barracudas.

Large waves in south area, so we didn't dive there during the stay.

Although I am a little disappointed with the water & weater condition, I still enjoyed my very first diving trip at a beautiful island..Sipadan....

ssra30, sorry we didn't go to Mabul and had no chance to say hello to your friend.

Hi,
I'll be in Sipadan/Mabul from 18-23rd August, would love to hear what you saw/if you have any specific recommendations.
Cheers
Jonathan

JONATHAN A,

Must dive at the Hanging Gardens and Staghorn Crest, nice wall and beautiful reefs. Most of the DM will only bring you there upon request and they prefer to bring you to the Barracuda Pont and South Point looking for Hammerhead.

Ranger_Diver, glad to hear you enjoyed the trip. Water there definitely could be better. I tentatively plan to get back there in April which supposed to be the best time to go, as far as visibility goes.

Jonathan A, depends on what you want to see, all the big fish, turtles are around Sipadan but if you want to see all the smaller stuffs, frogfish, ghost pipe fish, mandarin fish, blue ribbon eels then you need to go to Kapalai and Mabul. Most of the macro stuffs tend to be shallowerm, in the 5-10m range.

However the DM there told me that in August, there will be quite a bit of current near the surface and visibility in the shallow area would not be as good but would get clearer at 7-8m or deeper so it might not be the most ideal condition to see all the macro stuffs.

Jonathan A,
Because I am new to scuba diving, I can identify few fishes only.
Following are just for your reference :) This time I saw white tip reef sharks, sea turtles, barracudas, jack fishes (not in a large quantity), bat fishes and some other common tropical reef fishes.
I also saw garden eels, ghost pipe fishes, crocodile fishes at Barracuda Point.
Manta ray, hammer shark are reported but we didn't see anyone of them.
Agree with Peter Lim. If you don't request, DM there may just bring you to limited diving points.

ssra30,
Thanks again for your info about Sipadan. It's helpful for my first diving trip. I'm looking forward to visiting Sipadan again but now just an idea bearing in my mind. According to our diving club members' experiences, the visibility should be as good as Green Island/Orchid Island in Taiwan. The visibility is always 30m at least.
