Can anyone tell me in easy terms what you would use a jonline for...very new to diving & haven't got a clue...do I need one??

A jonline is used to attach yourself to a main descent or hang line for a safety/deco stop, rather than hold onto the main line itself. It's useful when the current is strong: it minimizes your being pushed around by the main line. It's also useful when the line is full of divers going up or down: you would hang off your jonline and be out of the way of others.

Do you need one? Depends on the dive conditions. Since you're very new to diving, I would advise against diving in conditions where jonlines would be advisable. On the other hand, if you do dive in conditions where you have a down line to descend and ascend on, and the conditions are such that it wouldn't create a task loading situation, you might want to try a jonline and practice the skill of tying it on and untying it.

I don't see why anyone carrying a primary reel would need one.

I carry and use on on every Deco dive when a deco station is not provided, would not be without it.
Just lives in the Drysuit pocket and comes out when needed, much easier and less complex than deploying a reel.

Cheers
Chris

A jonline frees up your hands, no concerns about the reel coming loose and feeding out more line, compact and easy to keep out of the way when not needed.
