Hey everyone

I've just joined the Board from down here in Melbourne, Australia. I've been reading a lot (and learning a lot) on the boards for a while now but only just got around to joining.

Looking forward to having some good discussions and getting some good advice in the future.

Roll on the Southern Hemisphere summer!

Welcome KiwiCrus!!

My husband and I will be your "neck of the woods" Feb 25th and 26th in 2009. We are spending about 3 1/2 weeks in Australia and NZ. Any ideas for things to do in Melbourne? We will arrive at 0800 and be leaving around 1800 the next day. So far the only thing we've thought doing is going to Queens Market. Won't be able to do any diving due to the fact we already have 6 dives scheduled for the trip and have alot of flying in between. Taking in some culture with the Tamaki Maori Village tour and dinner, Aboriginal Uluru tour, and Ayers rock, things like that.

Welcome, Lisa

nope - sorry... no more aussies allowed... especially if they are kiwi's in hiding :D

:happywave: and welcome to :sblogo:

things to do in melbourne... you can go to phillip island for the fairy penquin tour i guess

cheers!

welcome aboard

Hi Lisa

So you'll be in Melbourne then ... One thing you should do is go to Eureka Tower at Southbank where they have a viewing platform on the 88th floor (I think it's the 88th). It'll give you a great view of Melbourne and the Bay. You could also take a ride on Puffing Billy which is an old steam train running through the hills and bush of outer Melbourne. If you're into coffee or Italian food, you should definitely take a stroll up and down Lygon St (just north of the city) and the MANY cafes there. You can also take a river cruise up the Yarra River or take a ferry from the city over to Williamstown for an ice cream.

You could also take a drive out to the Yarra Valley and explore the many wineries and vinyards out there - the weather will be fantastic in February!

The Royal Botanic Gardens right beside the city are worth a look and then there are a few galleries, museams, restaurants, cafes and bars at Federation Square in the city that are worth a look too.

If you're into sports in general then you should check out the National Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) which is a short walk from the city.

You could also think about going to Healesville Sanctuary which is a zoo specialising in Australian native animals or there's Werribee Open Range Zoo where you can take a guided tour where Australian and African grassland animals roam over a 200 hectare property.

Good luck!

Welcome to Australia & SB :)

Not really enough time to do Healesville or the Yarra Valley IMHO, but the rest of Kiwi's suggestions were good (well, actually they were all good, if you were going to be here longer). Even Puffing Billy might be pushing it unless you're keen

We also have a very good zoo which is central and well worth a look - one of the best in the world, plus you'll get to see the mandatory kangaroos, koalas, emus etc without having to go out to Healsville
