Two of us drove up from Augusta, GA to dive Jocassee today. We left early (5:30a) anticipating a crowd given the Labor Day W/E. We made the trip in 2 hours (must have hit a wormhole - these cosmic events are just not explainable). We arrived to an almost empty parking lot at the ramp. When we left there were only about 10 vehicles - maybe everyone was preparing for the Clemson game or the opening season of college football? The lake is still way down. The boulders to the left of the ramp where we usually do our 15' safety stop are above water. Interesting to see what they look like though.
Dive one - off the ramp to the left, to the bones family and down to the trees. Max depth was 146'. After 130' or so it leveled out and we were squeezing our way through the tree branches to find a hole to deeper water. At 146' we ascended upward to 100' or so and swam through the trees. We had about 20 min total in the trees given the low lake levels. Following a compass heading toward the shore we hit the miniledge at about 30' and swam WNW (or there abouts) along it (this was at 45 feet a few months ago I think). We we turned back towards the ramp we came upon a big rock with about 10 cats under it. I guess with the boulders above water, the cats hangout wherever they can find cover. The it was back to the bones family and boat and onward to the second training platform. After handing out here a bit we exited past the 1st platform at 10' and went up the ramp. 146' for 1:07.
Second dive was down the ramp past both training platforms following the line down towards the trees. Max depth was around 100' . We did a loop through the trees and then headed towards the bones family again , the rock with the cats, and back to the training platform. 52 min dive. Vis was not very good today in the top 45' (maybe 6-8') but was 20' at depth. Again, after a good rinsing of wetsuits, we filled our tanks at Bill's and hit the wormhole back to Augusta and arrived at 2:15p - not sure how this retrograde time travel thing works. Great day of diving. Going to eat fish now.
