I am going to Fiji in April and the resort I am staying at ( Maravu Plantation resort )has partnered up with Jewel Bubble Divers. Was wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge of this dive outfit. Particularly interested in rental equipment as I need advice as to if I should rent here and take gear with me or would it be better to rent from them considering the hassle of baggage issues.
Also, I could possibly dive with Aqua Trek, but I would have to provide transport to and from shop each day. Would this be worth it?

Jewel Bubble is by far the most convenient dive operation to Maravu. While I have not been diving with them for a couple of years, my experience is that they do have well maintained rental gear. That said, I always take my own gear for reasons of fit, familiarity and I know it's history. I do think that Qio and Eunice run a good operation though, so if you really wanted to leave your gear at home you should be OK.

Aqua Trek is no longer in Taveuni (they are active in Beqa), as Garden Island Resort is under new ownership. The resort still has a dive operation, but in my opinion it isn't worth the hassle to use them from Maravu. The one other option that I would consider though is Tyrone Valentine with Vunibokoi Divers. Tyrone is the most experienced dive operator on Taveuni, having been with Ric Cammick at Dive Taveuni. He operates out of Tovutovu, but they will do pickups at Maravu. All three operations dive the same general sites.

I dove with Bubble Jewel a couple years ago and they are the best in Taveuni without question. They have good rental gear if you need it, absolutely need to dive the "White Wall " when the current is running.

Thank you very much for the info Guys. I have a few email enquirys in the works but what you have told me gives me reason to relax a little. I will post back when I get it all firmed up.
WHITE WALL,,,, You bet Critter Hunter, I have read so much about the various sites and just about all sources consider that a must dive.

Hey cbuck1962. We just got back from Taveuni, Fiji a week ago. Stayed at Maravu Resort and dived with Jewel Bubble Divers. Good reports for the resort, loved it. Bad reviews for the dive company though. The reasons are as follows:
1. It was agreed upon after discussion with the Dive company (Jewel Bubble Divers) we would dive some of the 12 renowned sites on the Rainbow Reef (specifically the great white wall and fish factory, which was the purpose of our trip). However -
a. We trusted Jewel Bubble Divers in their explanation as to why we couldn’t dive these sites, or any other on the rainbow reef for the first three days. However we lost our faith after speaking with other divers also staying at Maravu Resort (diving with Nakia divers) , who were currently day to day diving all of the sites we had requested. On the last day of five days of diving and knowing other divers were diving the White Wall and Fish Factory that day (even our RECEPTIONIST at Maravu Resort said that the conditions were perfect to dive these sites), Jewel Bubble Divers were still resistant. We almost cancelled our last dive day in protest, as out of eight dives we dived only one of our specified dives on the Rainbow Reef. Finally with the support of all other divers who had experienced and protested with us over the last five days, we finally got to dive the Rainbow Reef’s great white wall and fish factory. After much discussion with other divers we could only surmise that their resistance was due to costs. Even the staff at the resort we’re extremely surprised at our experience.
b. We were told that we were diving the Rainbow Reef on the first three days but according to other divers and our locality maps, we weren’t. We felt like we were treated like tourists who had no idea where we were diving and wouldn’t know any better.
2. Poor quality equipment. We had numerous encounters with faulty and unsafe equipment. Two non-functional BC’s – the first had a large leaking inflator hose that needed to be replaced. The second we were fascinated to watch them say it was okay for a fellow diver to commence diving with a continuously self inflating BC, an impossible and dangerous task. We were again amazed despite all other divers in the boat protesting, that they okayed a diver to dive with a weight belt that was far too small for the diver, just dangerous. This should not occur for an organisation that is affiliated with PADI (and has been reported to PADI). We brought our own regs, dive computers, fins and mask.
3. All fellow divers we dived with over those five days were extremely dissatisfied with the dives and that we were not formally diving the Rainbow Reef sites and again, some have written into PADI forums regarding their dissatisfaction with this company.
So would suggest you find another dive company (eg Nakia Resort and Dive - they did do a pickup for a crew at the Maravu Resort each day). And bring what gear you have of your own (though I cant comment on other dive operators in the area). Most people we met had their own gear. Hope that all helps.

We just got back from Taveuni and dove with Jewel Bubble Divers and would not recommend diving with them. If you do be sure to bring your own gear as they do not maintain their equipment.

I rented their gear and the high pressure hose on my regulator popped (split) on my second dive. I had to end the dive as my tank emptied by the time I'd reached the surface. Our dive master did not even bother to check on me and said nothing when he surfaced at the end of the dive. No one from the company apologized or seemed to acknowledge the potential danger they had put me in. The owner assured me he would fix the regulator for my next dive. The next day the regulator hose had been replaced but the dive computer battery was low and the computer did not work. Luckily my husband had a spare computer otherwise I would have been diving without a depth gauge.

In addition to the poor equipment, the dive master was horrible and did not seem to care about the varying skills of the dive group (beginner and experienced divers in one group). He gave very poor dive briefings and was not attentive during the dive. He also collected shells and handled marine life.

We also did not do the rainbow reef dives we were expecting and were told that the currents were too strong.

This is the worst company I've ever dived with.

oh no, I have already made the booking with them :(

Bula Pacificgirl,

Sorry to hear of your bad experience! Do you know the names of the DM and other people you dealt with at Jewel? For future reference, there is another dive operation just south of them called Taveuni Ocean Sports that is excellent.
