We found a number of these last wekend. I've never seen them before. They were around Santa Barabara Island on the Southern California coast-

Above 20 ft with an 80 ft bottom, Water temp 53F, moderate current
Seen until about noon
Bioluminescence visible in daylight
They are about 5-6" in length, about 3/4" high and paper thin
They "swim" unidirectionally (no visible forward or backward)
There were a number of other jellies in the water at the same time

Jelly. One of those "Venus' Girdle" ctenophores.

They don't taste good.
