My wife an I have been diving twice off the beach on Anna Maria island: once at the Sugar Barge and once on Spanish Rocks. Both times there was a significant amount of jellyfish around. Is this a normal occurrence, seasonal, weather related, tide related? My wife seems more afraid of the jellies than of most anything else we might find diving due to a bad snorkling experience a few years back.

I have been there several times and not seen any. It probably has a lot to do with the current but I'm just guessing.

I believe it is seasonal based on gulf currents and the jellys life cycle.

Good information here Overview

I was diving off of Venice on Wednesday & noticed a few as well. As a matter of fact, I was concentrating on looking for teeth & almost ran face first into one. eek. I agree that it seems to be seasonal.
