I'm certainly no expert, but I believe Immersion Pulmonary Edema (IPE) can have that effect (manifesting either above or below the surface).
That is my thought too. If gear failure, should have survived using instructor's reg. The dive is a very easy site, the Pyramids are concrete structures, about 30 or more.
