Are there any better places than Ft. Wetherill for visibility in the Jamestown/Newport area? I am within an hour or so of the area, but most of the time while at Ft. Wetherill I am disapointed in the visibility. Is the poor visibility indicative of the entire area?

When you put that many divers in such a small area, that is what happens. But to answer your question, yes there are sites with much better vis. You need to get offshore a little ways(boat needed). I live on the Island and coincidentally work near you, in Taunton.

Actually at Ft Wetherill you have to go out around the points or around the island to get better vis on a busy day. The coves are silty and get mucked up quite a bit.

I realize that high useage creates poor vis, but are there any other shore dive sites in that area that are better?

What about Beavertail, Fort Adams, or Kings Beach?

Beavertail PL 3 usually has better vis due to its rocky bottom and Kingsbeach due to the heavy sand. Ft Adams is near the channel and gets a bit current swept and can be better also.

Have you tried the Eisenhower house over at Ft Adams? That tends to be a little better.

I tend to get a bit spoiled because all of my diving is from a boat. If you can get access to one it will open up a whole new world to you. You will find much much better vis just offshore.
