Has anyone been diving in Jamaica?
We will be going to Couples Tower in early october as diving is included ( for me) and golf for my ol' man.
I would love to hear form any one who has been there

Might want to throw down for trip insurance, it is the height of Hurricane season.

Agree with the trip insurance. We are scheduled for Sandals at Ocho Rios leaving this Friday and return the next Thursday. Looks like I will be very glad to have the trip insurance with what is developing in the Atlantic. :dontknow:

I stayed at Couples "Tower Isle" a few years back. It's a nice place. Rooms were very nice and food was excellent.
I would suggest a ocean view room here. The water views are great.

I think we stayed there 3 nights. Didn't do any diving because when i went on the 2nd day, they told me I had to sign up for it earlier. I'm not sure if it was full or what. but they seemed like they weren't making exceptions for people not signed up. This was my only negative experience with this resort.

The water (at the beach) was very murky. you couldn't see your toes. So not sure how good the diving would be in the Ocho Rios area (where Tower Isle is).

I've also been to Couples Negril. It was very nice also and I'd go back.
Rooms were very nice, but I would say upgrading to an "ocean view room" is a waste of money as the way the rooms are situated, if you can see the ocean, it's through the trees. We were in a suite closest to the water and we could still barely see the ocean. If I went back, I'd just get a standard garden view room here. Food was good, but not as good as in Couples Ocho Rios (Tower Isle). The beach was MUCH nicer though in Negril as was the water clearness. it was as clear as bath water.

Did 4 days worth of diving here. Walked up to the dive shack to get scheduled early after being "bumped" out at Ocho Rios. The divemasters were much friendlier and asked if I wanted to go on that afternoons dive. So I was in the water diving within an hour or two of arriving.

Dives were off a Newton 35 dive special. Nice boat. All gear including mask/fins were available. regs (at the time) were Sherwood regs and BC's. They worked fine with no problems. All dives were one tank dives. (65ft or less to include everyone). one trip in the morning and one in the afternoon. except on Saturday they did a deep dive (95' max) and a shallow dive in the morning and did boat maintenance in the afternoon. No dives on Sunday as it was the crews off day. At the time no Nitrox available. not sure about now, but they were all shallow dives so not really needed.

The dive sites were all coral reefs. The reefs were colorful and in great shape. Not as much fish as the FL Keys, but still decent.

I was impressed and pleased with the Couples Negril dive operation.

EDIT:

back on the subject of the first resort, Tower Isle, I suggest doing the Dunn's RIver Falls excursion. We enjoyed that. If you've got "water shoes" or shoes that can get wet, that's suggested. take some cash for tip for your guide and the "flea market" you have to walk through when you leave if you want to get anything.

They also have a plantation tour. It's neat, but not exciting. kinda like a school field trip.

They also have riding stables that you get to ride a trail up to the top of one of the mountains. It was enjoyable.

If I went back, I'd do the Dunn's River Falls trip again and prob skip the rest of it and sit on the beach the rest of the time.

Not necessarily the height, but close........Thinking Sept is it, no??...@ least that's our thinking South Louisiana.......

I've been to Jamaica 6 times and dove on 5 of them. Did my OW and AOW there actually. All of my dive trips were at Super Clubs resorts so some of what I say may not apply to Couples but it wouldn't suprise me if it did.

First, you are on the north shore of Jamaica so if any storms pop up and come through ( common ) you'll be blown out. These resorts tend to have small boats.

You'll need to register on the day you arrive ( if the shop is still open ) for the next day. If they are already closed you'll register the next day for the next next day.

They typically run a (1) deep dive in the morning and another (1) shallow dive in the afternoon. When you register they typically won't let you on the deep dive even if you show them a dozen c-cards and hundreds of logged dives. They want to dive with you period first.

You very well may only get 1 dive a day in. If you actually get both, consider yourself lucky, or you are taking a class with them.

Jamaica reefs aren't that great because Jamaicans are hungry not-so-picky fisherman. You'll see a lot of Sgt Majors and Lion Fish. But heh, the waters are warm and blue.

On one of my trips I stayed at a place that didn't include the cost of diving. That was a better experience as they jumped up in excitement when they had a diver that wanted to buy a 6 dive package. Had some real fun that week and ran into the same DM a few years later at another resort and being 'in' with him opened up a lot of opportunties.

Thanks for the replies, really helpful.
I dived in St Lucia earlier in the year and enjoyed that so I am hoping Jamaica will be good too.
Thanks also for the tip aobut the hurrican ~ I live on the other side of the Atlantic ~ unusually it is is warm here at the moment.
If the weather holds we will be there for a week from 1st - 8th. I will let you know how it went.

Hello all you lucky divers......
Just returned from CTI and agree with your comments above.
Weather hot and humid, diving cancelled only once due to poor viz following an overnight storm, so we went to Dunns River - really fun trip.
CTI is a nice hotel, excellent food and staff.
Diving was nice and friendly but not spectacular, one of my buddies told me he had seen Dolphins a few days before I arrived, otherwise the ocean was pretty but not teeming with fish.
The dive centre staff were switched on and professional but the centre was too small for what they were trying to do, there was insufficient space for equipment wash and storage. I took my own gear and was glad I did.
The dive boat was apparently in dry dock, so the glass boat boat become an all purpose vessel. It was ok when only a few of us, but not really up to the job, shame, as the guys work so hard to give a good service.
Thanks for the advice, looking forward to my next trip....................

Hey All-

We're blasting off next week for a couple days at The Caves and are looking for recommendations for good local dive operations for a day or two of diving.

Thanks,
NYB
