Its real.

I'm sure most of you have seen the pic of the 'shark' inside the wave as the surfer looks at it - its been circulaed over the internet for some time as a shark - but its infact a dolphin. That shot was taken the same day as the pic posted in this thread and there are several other pics in the same series.

I pulled it into PS, and while it's difficult to tell to what extent things have been altered, the surfers were likely NOT in the original image as there are tell tale signs that they were added.

Do dolphins surf? I'm betting they do. Watching them jump the wake of ships repeatedly would take a LOT more effort vs. surfing. Of course they would have to be careful not to get beached....

Bugman, do you have links to the series of images that you mention. I would be interesting to see them.

Other threads containing pics taken by the same photographer that day - including the 'shark' pic that gets thrown around online so often...

Another pic http://www.surfshooter.com/D1.jpg

Good article on the misinformation as well as the photographer http://snopes.com/photos/animals/surfer.asp

More SB threads that may contain links to more shots from different sets of pics taken that day http://www.scubaboard.com/t37116-.html and http://www.scubaboard.com/t42902-.html

I believe this link used to have more shots with multiple dolphins, but its dead now...

http://www.scubaboard.com/showpost.php?p=458525&postcount=10 for a post where that came from...

The pics have been circulating for a few years - lots of the links are broken now that contained more of the series

I have seen porpoises "surfing" the bow wave of various size ships in the past.
