yeah, I'd say even more than 80%. Lots of people just watch the video and do the little class on the boat because they don't want to "waste the time in the pool"...panic when they get in, get big eyes, can't equalize, can't clear their masks, kick upward (if they kick at all)...

It is sad that people can't admit their limitations....Had a couple. She was doing a discover dive and he said he was an experienced diver (diving for 10+ years). Turns out he dove the last time maybe 10 years ago....on the shallow dive he ran out of air in 10 minutes and I had to drag him all the way back to the boat (the minute I started dragging, he stopped kicking)....

Leesa, which operators? Do you agree 80% never get in a pool here on Discover Scuba? It is not required, right?
I'll bet that there is more Discover Scuba training in pools than for OW, at least on Maui. The reason being that a lot of Discover Scuba is done by on-site operators at hotels with pools, while a lot of OW cert is done by dive shops without pools.

On Maui I'll bet that more than 80% of all OW certification classes never get in a pool at all. My instructor just took me out to a shallow sand area at Ulua beach. My nephew did his "pool" work at MM14 and Old Airport dive sites in Maui. I don't know the specific language for the various certification agencies, but the a safe, benign ocean site meets the requirements.

If the divers in the photos are either Discover Scuba (non-certified) divers, or an OW cert class doing their first "pool" dives, then what you photographed isn't all that shocking.

agree. Ko-Ko crater is pretty appropriate. I just really like it when people look like they have swam in their past. I had not seen Intro's in awhile...

Nice avatar Catherine
Thanks jep...I never go anywhere so it is like changing my outfit. ya'll are my social life. Hey, isn't it time to change yours?

excuse me...what pool? Most Intros don't ever see a pool. I am not convinced some of them can swim. I am just a casual observer usually, mind you...

But, no pool. One company Aquazone does.
And we saw last week how well that worked for them. How big was the settlement?

I know that Island Divers Hawaii have pool time for their "discover scuba". But having watched many "discovers" in the water has helped me decide to NOT persue DM statis...

JAcks in Kona has a pool with a window open to the sidewalk so passerbys can watch and get lured in. It's pretty cool

I only heard through the grapevine... they hit the BC manufacture for most of it...had a slow leak but probably wasn't a factor. One of those deals where they assign percentages of "blame". Disturbing...

I think Aquazone is one of the best operators from what I have seen. I only dove with them once, but Devon is pretty squared away and conscientious,, IMO. I just don't see how they deserved that if she had a heart attack. I heard it was in the Advertiser a couple days back.
