Can some one please answer this question?? Is it a scuba urban legend that women attract sharks when we have our perods? My dive instructor told me that this is not true because the blood that "flows" (sorry) during our period is "dead". However it seems to be plastered all over this site that the exact opposite is true.

the question gets asked every other month or so, and the answer is generally the same: women do not attract sharks while menstruating, for the reason your instructor gave.

check out this link for a start: http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22222&highlight=menstruation+and+sharks

in that thread, walter, a regulator here, provides a couple of links to still more threads on the subject. in fact, i'd say there is information plastered all over this site stating that menstrual blood does not attract sharks. where (here) did you find information to the contrary?

i hope you find enough new information to ease your fears.

:)

best,

What about male dolphins attacking females divers during that time of the month.

Truth or fiction?

Thanks for the info Dive Mistress! I usually saw it under titles like "Why women should not dive" and a few other places. But anyway.....THANKS!

Wendy...I've never heard that one. But my first reaction is that it isn't true.

I'll see if I can find any info on it.

and being there in Florida, I hope this doesn't offend you, but I did a Google search about dolphin attacks on women out of curiosity, and the one meaningful reference had to do with a former member of the Miami Dolphins. Are they included?

But seriously, have such incidents occurred involving....Flipper? If so, was it during menstruation or ovulation? I have heard that they are very sexual creatures, but that idea is just nasty.

i've heard about those nasty dolphins several times. a girlfriend once went swimming with dolphins in florida and was warned by the show's staffers to watch out for a particular dolphin, because he was suspected of several unwanted overtures.

i've heard stories like this numerous times, from numerous sources. maybe i'm gullible (picture fish with hook in mouth) but i believe it's true. no data, but a lot of anecdotal evidence.

I HAVE heard of male dolphins getting ...amorous... with guests during dolphins dives and programs which promote close contact with them but the fact that a women's mentrual cycle was the cause of it was never mentioned. In fact, the incidences reported happened to men as often as women.

Dolphins are very , shall we say Social creatures, and easily aroused. People have been roughly engaged by male and female dolphins during different "Swim With the Dolphin Programs". Some dolphins are more prone to make that type of physical contact with swimmers but most of the incidents " I am told" are because of people stroking the dolphins underside in an attemt to rub their belly and making contact with the dolphins privates.

I know there are arguements pro and con about swimming with the dolphins. I can tell you that my experience with them was one of the highlights of my life.

but expectant mothers are prohibitted from participating in the Water and Dolphin Exploration program at Miami Seaquarium .

I have never seen or heard of any reason that women should not dive during their monthly cycle. Only if related cramps and other symptoms are too severe, then perhaps a diver should reconsider a given dive.
