But last night I finished my AOW up with 2 night dives. I was a little skittish about the night dives but they ended up being great! Turns out there are no man devouring fish or beast in our lake that only come out at night:D

At the end of the 2nd diving after our 3 min stop the DM had me turn off my light at the anchor line and we hung out there for a min or 2 while our eyes got accustom to the light and watch the red and green lights of the boat. It was great!

Water temp were great as were conditions top side. The DM took myself and 2 others on this trip and told us this was one of the few time that he got to dive at night and could accually enjoy it. He said he didn't feel the need to babysit us and could enjoy showing us everything.

Well... one more class on tuesday, not for AOW, but just cause I wanted to take it. I think I'll take alittle course work break and enjoy some dives before I get into Rescue Diving course.

Congratulations. Night dives are the best.

You didn't do too bad. Diving is about getting in the water and having a good safe time. Invariably you learn as you dive - and often practical things that courses do not teach.

Night diving is a hoot. If you get to the Big Island, dive night with the Manta Rays.

Peace,

John Burns

congrats- took me 4 years to do my first night dive, now I TRY TO EVERY WEEK!!

Hi guys,
Are night dives really that fun? I'm going for my AOW in a few weeks and a night dive is one of the dives and honestly..it's not something I'm overly excited about. Don't get me wrong, I want to experience as much as I can but with night dives, between low visability and the temp. being colder(while I'm already cold during day dives), it's not something I'm too excited about. Although, I am told that there's lots to see at night when some of the sealife comes out. But between the cold and low-vis..I'm not excited. Any thoughts?
I hope all is well, take care guys.

I think they're good. Buoyancy needs a little more attention. Seen some neat stuff come out at night. But mucking around in the dark to set up gear or tear it down can be a pain. Try to plan ahead to make that go smoothly. And it's so nice to come back from the dive and crawl into bed (we camp & dive).

I sure wish my night dive for AOW had been as fun. It was the opposite for me. These darn cold water temps of Monterey Bay. Had spent all morning doing navigation, and guess I never quite got my core warmed up enough. When we did the night dive I was so cold. Started getting the whole tunnel vision thing. Temps were about 49F, and I just wanted it to end. Still need to 'get back on that horse' and try it again, but it hasn't happened yet.

My dive buddy wife and I have only done two night dives of our forty-seven logged dives. I had to wait until she was ready before we did our first night dive. The agreement was we'd wait until we were someplace warm with clear water. I couldn't wait to dive at night; she would have rather been anywhere else but underwater after sundown. Fortunately she has a philosophy she got from a popular graduation song years ago. It says "do one thing every day that scares you." At the time her night dive was that day's challenge.

She had problems on that first dive until I took her by the arm and began guiding her, pointing out the sights she had been missing. Once I latched onto her arm, she relaxed and ended up enjoying the dive. I missed a lot of great picture opportunities that night, but she is more important than a few pixelated memories.

She was still timid on our next night dive on our next trip, but much better prepared mentally to dive at night. Once we hit the water, she adapted quickly and was soon taking pictures and enjoying the variety of night life. I now knew she'd lost her fear of diving at night in warm, clear water. I'll post a gallery of night pics we took. She took most of them.

Now, cold, dark, murky water at night? Sorry, that experience doesn't get me excited, but we'll do it. When the time comes it'll be our scare for the day.
