A loofah?

sea salp?

Sea Salp looks close but I'm not sure. I should have mentioned that they are about 2-3 feet long and have the diameter of a baseball, give or take a little either way. The only thing that the guys running the dive shop told me was that they are harmless, they don't sting.

Well done! Now I wanna go to Tarifa

Thanks guys. After looking up pyrosome I found this video Life, Death & Rebirth - YouTube and found a tone more info. It appears that when you shine your light on some of them they "glow" back. I'll have to remember this next time and hopefully I'll have my video camera with me.
