Well, the wetsuit season has finally started for me! About time! Went out on Captain Rob’s boat, Giant Stride, this past Sunday, the 11th. Did two dives.

Dive 1 – Swede’s Cove. A pretty cool dive site. Dropped anchor in the middle of the cove, in about 20ft of water. Temp was 47-48 at the surface, about 45 at the bottom. Great vis, probably 30-35ft. Lowest depth ~30ft. Dive time about 38mins, my buddy was starting to run low on air and it was starting to become a bit chilly. On the right side of the cove there’re a couple of narrow inlets that you can swim into – pretty cool, but they’re also pretty shallow, about 10ft. On the plus side, the water in them was much warmer, about 50. Along the center of the cove are a couple of ledges, and another small and very narrow inlet, with a small overhang at the end, pretty cool. Yet another inlet is on the far left, but I didn’t make it into there. The floor of the cove is a maze of rocky ledges, swimthroughs, what have you… The whole cove is a great place to just play underwater, up and down, in and out of inlets, depressions, overhangs… A diver’s playground! Didn’t see much marine life, though. Plenty of kelp and seaweeds, but marine life was restricted to starfish, a few crabs, sea snails, hermit crabs, and lots of small crustaceans (krill perhaps?). Still a very cool site. I can imagine it would be teeming in the warmer months.

Dive 2 – Duck Island. This was to be a seal dive. As we pulled up, the seals all jumped in the water from the nearby rock, and were bobbing all around us as we were gearing up to get in. We slide in the water one by one, but by the time we were under, the seals all scattered. The entire dive I saw only one seal swim past me about 20ft away. And I was one of the luckier ones. Most didn’t see any seals at all, though one of the divers found a small cove where they all apparently decided to hide in, and saw quite a few. So the dive wasn’t as exciting as I’d hoped, but it was still nice to be in the water. The site used to be a practice area for the Navy in the past, so supposedly there may still be some unexploded ordnance around. Temps were 47-49, 40mins, vis 35ish at the beginning, but dropped to about 25 towards the end of the dive. Lowest depth again ~30ft.

Oh, and on a brighter note, my pressure gauge flooded! It was still readable, though the needle kemp twitching. And I just had the thing serviced! Oh well. Looks like a new SPG in the stars.

Almost forgot Capt. Rob's boat, Giant Stride. A very nice boat, clean and appeared to be well run. Easy to get in & out of, nice wide dive platform on the back. Plenty of room on the deck. A V-berth for all your dry goodies and a chemical head. Even a warm shower, which came in very handy before the 2nd dive. And the atmosphere on board was great. My only gripe, albeit very small, was that the tank racks couldn't accomodate the fatter 8" dia. tanks (i.e. a good majority of LP steels). I could still secure them more or less reliably using the bungee, but not sure how well that would've held up if the seas were rougher. Still, a very nice outfit - I'd go out with them again any day!

Can't wait for the Aug. Trip!!! How many divers on board with you? Did you get cold? I am thinking about doing the Treasure Hunt this weekend but am not sure I will be able to withstand the cold yet. I am generally pretty comfortable in temps in the 50s but haven't experienced water colder than that.

We had 7 divers including the divemaster + the skipper. We had room to spare. I'd say 8 divers will fit on the boat in comfort. But no more than that, maybe a couple of snorkelers. 12 (for which it's certified) is really pushing it. My body wasn't feeling cold at all, despite the somewhat baggy wetsuit. The only part of me that got chilled were my hands and feet, but then again my gloves and booties are the thinnest parts of my suit (5mm). If you have a nice well-fitting suit and are comfortable in 50F water, you should have no problems with 45. You can always get in the water, do the 1st dive, and if you feel too cold, don't do the second. One thing that also helps is having some warm water to pour into the suit before & after the dive. Does wonders!
